Angelo's Story

This is a brief sketch of my life activities since my days in the Maxwell Park area of East Oakland. I managed to get through college, Oakland City College and San Francisco State, and then went on to Berkeley for graduate work in sociology. About half way through my program, the draft threatened me and I did an alternative service with the US Public Health Service. Shortly before this I was married and USPHS sent us to Washington DC for almost three years where I was assigned to NIH and essentially did my dissertation research. After DC I took my first teaching position at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. I had two wonderful daughters and finished one big dissertation while there from 1970 to 1974! I then took a position at Ohio State. My daughters, Alicia and Alexsa, essentially only know Columbus, or Upper Arlington,OH, as their home. Alicia has just moved from University of Iowa to Michigan State. She is an applied physicist who became involved with science education and is now a science educator. She was quite happy in California where she went to do graduate work at Cal Tech after Cornell. She was at Berkeley for a post-doc and then at Stanford in a research position until she realized the downside of being on ¿soft money¿ or grant money, it usually runs out, so took a teaching position. Alexsa was fortunate enough to go to Harvard as a government major and during her time there also spent time in three Latin American countries. After graduation she took a position at American University in Cairo for a year working and studying Arabic. After Cairo she returned to Boston and worked for Harvard in an office assisting international students and later in an immigrant social services agency as a para-legal. This prompted her to go onto NYU law school and she is now an immigration attorney in Miami. I remarried 14 years ago and my wife, Nancy, and I enjoyed careers at Ohio State. She was in the school of nursing. Nancy...Expand for more
also has two lovely daughters. Her oldest, Cory, teaches at the Latin School in Chicago. She and her husband, Sam, met at Penn and after graduation they moved to San Francisco for two years. I thought with Alicia and Cory both in California, and Alexsa clerking there for a year, Nancy and I might move there at some point. But, there is little hope as Alicia left for Iowa and then Cory and Sam went to Michigan for graduate school, she in education and he in architecture. He is currently with an architectural firm in Chicago, but looking for an academic position. They have just had their first child, our first grandchild, Owen. Nancy¿s youngest, Liz, also went to Michigan. She then worked in New York at NYU¿s child study center. This position prompted her to go on to graduate school in clinical psych at the University of Maryland. She was recently married to Jon who she has known since Michigan. He works for the Department of Home Land Security keeping us safe. The age range of our girls is 10 years so they have a lot in common all being raised in Central Ohio. Nancy and I have recently moved to New Haven, CT. Nancy's hails from the East coast so currently we are on her coast. We are both affiliated with the Yale School of Nursing [angelo dot alonzo at yale dot edu]. They recruited Nancy and I retired from Ohio State and came along as part of the package. Before we left I had just received a research grant that I could move to Yale, but this has turned out to be one gigantic administrative mess. On the bright side we are doing work together in China and India and travelling extensively. In addition to Nancy¿s work in HIV/AIDS, she is also director of the PhD program and carries on an extensive research agenda. Little by little she is dragging me into working with graduate students and I have also begun working with other faculty members on various projects. So much for my retirement. But for fun I have begun auditing courses at Yale.
