Anil's Story

anil pereira at comcast dot net . I continue to have fun and am enjoying every minute of life! My bio: I grew up in Montreal and like any good Quebecer, learned French, hockey and soccer. I went to Loyola H.S. and was schooled in the Jesuit tradition, developing many friendships, a lot which are in place today. After Loyola, my parents moved to Vancouver Island, BC--and took me with them--and I worked for a few years in restaurants and took college courses on the side. You could say I was a bit lost, although I slowly managed to "find myself". In 1984, I got serious about school and headed to Lethbridge, AB where I finished off my Management degree and met my wife, Sheri. We have been friends and partners ever since and she is the kindest, most levelheaded, laid-back person I have ever met. They say opposites attract. After graduation, we moved to Calgary where I worked as a management consultant for Andersen (now Accenture) and we got married in the summer of '88. Sheri and I then went back to grad school at the same time--she into law at Osgoode Hall in Toronto and me into business school at Wharton in Philadelphia, PA, flying back and forth every 2 weeks. We spent our summer internships in New York and Vancouver, and then moved full-time to NYC where I joined American Express and Sheri finished her LLM in Tax and joined Orrick Herrington (the same firm as Ken Aboud, Loyola '80). While at AmEx, I had the good fortune of being mentored by the likes of Anne Busquet, Aldo Papone, Mary Miller and Phillip Riese--all senior executives who took the time and patience to teach me what I didn't know about marketing (which was a lot!). In early '97, we moved back west--to the San Francisco Bay Area--to be on the same...Expand for more
time zone as our families. I joined a fledgling Internet company, VeriSign, and helped grow the company into a global player. My last role there was EVP & GM of the Enterprise Division. I learned a tremendous amount while at VeriSign--both about business and about myself--and was privileged to work with some of the brightest people I have ever met, including Richard Yanowitch, Dana Evan and Stratton Sclavos, who mentored me in the ways of the Valley. I also had the privilege to join a number of company boards including SF Interactive (merged with BSS) and Neoteris (acquired by Netscreen) and the advisory board of Index venture capital. During that time, we had two more children, Bennett and Henry, and our kids are now 12,10, and 9 years old. In 2003, I left VeriSign to try my hand again in a smaller company and joined...Classmates.com! The move to Seattle gave us the opportunity to get closer to our families and our second home on Salt Spring Island, BC. In late 2004, the company was acquired by UOL so I made a graceful exit. After taking some time off, I set up show as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Ignition Partners, and incubated a new venture--SecondSpace--which we funded in June of 2006. In the fall of 2008, we realized that Seattle was never going to be a good fit for us and, missing the sun, made a spur of the moment decision to move back down to the Bay Area and are back in our old town of San Carlos...and loving it! On the home front, most of our activities revolve around the kids (skiing, swimming, soccer, scouts/guides) although we also get in a lot of travel, and Sheri and I are still "entertainment junkies". We spend most of the summer up in BC at our home on Salt Spring Island. regards, anil
