Anita's Story

Hello fellow classmates! I can't believe it's been almost 35 years since last walking the hallowed halls of Glacier... My life in a nut shell... My husband Tom and I have not only a fantastic marriage, but 5 great kids; Kristi (33), Matt (31), Jeff (27), Micah (23) and Daniel (20)... we've been busy! Kristi, a delight, is using her business degree, running her own limosine business. She's back living at home, post-divorce, to save $$. Also keeping ME sane in this lopsided, male dominated family! Kristi has been dating Jason for several years... that's one more (great) guy around the house! Matt is a doctoral student at U of British Columbia, along with his Argentine wife Analia, who is also working on her PhD. Matt has 2 under grad degrees from UW, and a Masters from USC. Besides being a fulltime student, he also works (very) part time at a publishing house in Vancouver and writes a blog called "cavequacking" it's on blogspot. They won't let me post the actual address here, but do try to check it out! By the way-- it's fiction, so don't look for me in his stories (although I do all the time!! Jeff (USC '04)is a great guy. He's also a partner at Mercer Builders, building custom homes. Jeff just bought his first house, on Mercer Island, and has been dating Katie Lombardo (USC '05) for several (6?) years. Micah is back at home, taking a semester off from college in Bellingham. He's now working full time for a property management firm. Micah plays soccer for the Tacoma Tides, and the Tacoma Stars- both semi-pro men's soccer teams, traditional and indoor. Tacoma Stars won the National championship last yr in Vegas! He graduated from Bellarmine Prep '06 in Tacoma, where his soccer team were 4A state champions and NSCAA National Champs! Micah was team captain junior and Sr year. His club team, FC United 87, were 5 time Premier 1 state champs, 2 time regional champs and 2nd place nationally. Micah's humor is similar to mine... so we keep each other in stitches much of the time :) Daniel, our "baby", and a 2 time Parade High School All American, is at Wake Forest U. in N Carolina. Dan has maintained the Dean's list while at Wake, despite playing division 1 soccer! More about Dan below. Me. I was married to Phil Bennett (GHS 76) for 9 years before divorcing. We've remained cordial and see each other at holidays/social events, sat together at the kids' sporting events, etc. He's actually moving a block away from us, with his lovely wife Ann. They're very much involved in Kristi and Matt's lives. I married Tom Wenzel (Fife HS '70, Whitman College '75) in May of 86. Best thing I ever did! He is truly my soul-mate. Tom brought Jeffrey with him into the marriage and we became the typical American "blended family". Together we had Micah and Daniel. Tom is a CFP and works in downtown Seattle for RBC Wealth Management. I did years of in-home daycare, allowing me to be at home with my own kids while they were young. I've also always really enjoyed children, so it was a good fit. Then I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma 13 yea...Expand for more
rs ago, at which point I "retired" from daycare. I've battled (and won!)it 3 times and have remained in remission for 6+ years this time! Yeah!! Because NHL can go into an indolent stage, I've been on prophylactic oral chemo and steroids for the past 11 years. (Hey-- it beats the alternative!!) During my "retirement" I did lots of volunteer work until becoming very, very bored! Then I became a retail buyer 6 years ago. I worked for a small upscale gourmet kitchenwares store and totally loved it. Cooking, baking and entertaining are a passion of mine, so it was a dream job. (plus I LOVE to shop! :) AND I could do part of it at home! Aug. 08 the store sold and I was laid off. Right now I'm looking... and also trying to get and STAY healthy. Though my NHL is pretty much in check, I was diagnosed 3 years ago with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), an auto-immune disease. (interesting fact; those with NHL also have a high incidence of RA. Weird...) To be honest, I've struggled with the RA and fought hard to maintain a positive outlook and keep my sense of humor through out my physical set backs... 4 times in a foot cast the last 3 years, hand/wrist braces on and off, back surgery last April... I've started a new chemo treatment protocol and it's help tremendously. I've travelled extensively the past 6 years. My youngest son, Dan, left home at just 14 to go into the US Soccer residency program in Bradenton, FL. He lived there fulltime at the IMG Academy and went to a private school, Edison Academic, and also had tutoring while traveling. They accelerated him through grades 9-12 in just two and a half years. He was Captain of the US Under 17 National team. (He would have played in Egypt last fall in the U20 World Cup, but was injured last May.) We've followed him around the world, watching him play; to Hong Kong, Japan, Korea (for Jr world cup) Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, England, Jamaica, Argentina, Mexico. He's gone to many more places without us. He started Wake Forest University in January of 08. By also attending summer school the past 2 summers, he already has a comunications degree and working on an English degree. His first season, the Deamon Deacons were the returning NCAA Champions. Dan started, playing every game, as a freshman and was an ACC All freshman team and Freshman All American. Wake lost last year in the final four semi finals. Daniel, sadly, was out last season and "red-shirting". He tore his LCL and PCL playing last May (a dirty two footed foul, grrr) and had knee reconstruction in July. He is now fully recovered and the season has begun. We were in Buenos Aires again, for 3 weeks in summer of 08, for Matthew and Ani's wedding. I love it there and we've concidered it a possible retirement location... the US dollar buys 4 times more there.... I'll try to post some pictures. I'm heavier than I was in high school, but other than that-- it's still me! My other interests, besides my family, include: gardening, painting, reading, bible study, friends, my pets, and soccer!! I hope to hear from any of you soon!
