Anita's Story
Life
I worked as a Teller at Marina City Bank to accumulate funds for college. The next year, at EIU, taught me about juggling school and work ... I babysat for a 2-year-old from 2 pm to 2 am daily ... whew! Back in Chicago, I was employed by Creative Establishment, an a/v production company which created million $ industrial shows for Coca-Cola, McDonaldÃÂs, G.D. Searle, etc. The Boss, also the President of the National Association of Woman Business Owners, was my greatest business mentor. She provided endless opportunities to be challenged and to grow in confidence and abilities. I worked my way through the ranks from Receptionist to Office Manager, learning the business and life skills which would open many doors in the future.
After a few years of living in the heart of Rush Street and disco days, I met my husband Julian in 1981 and left Chicago the day after we were married in 1983, to pursue a business venture in Houston. Julian bought into an auto parts chain which grew from 8 to 19 stores within the year. Meanwhile, I was the Office Manager of the same chain ÃÂ the liaison between the Owners and Store Managers and responsible for all banking/finances.
Next, I began at the City of Houston as the Assistant to the Director of the Public Service Department which encompassed the Telecommunications, Transportation, Franchise Administration, Regulatory Affairs, and the newly created Cable Access and 9-1-1 Divisions. The diversity of the tasks which needed to be addressed and accomplished kept me on my toes and dramatically increased the range of my experiences.
I was lured to Dean Witter Reynolds by the Branch Manager whom I had met on a personal basis. I studied long and hard, tested well, and ultimately trained at The World Trade Center in NYC before going into production as a Stockbroker. I ultimately left DWR to begin a family. It was of the utmost importance to me to be a stay-at-home Mom for my kids, and be present for all of their firsts.
In the interim, Julian and I opened a trendy Mom & Pop Âboutique auto parts store where he was Purchasing/Sales...Expand for more
Agent and I was Office Manager and Delivery Driver. That was fun! We soon hired many more Delivery Drivers and in 1992 I began the process of birthing, loving and raising three rambunctious boys.
Julian closed the shop after assessing that the healthy bottom line was still not commensurate with his investment of time, effort and stress. He began Nursing School and studying while simultaneously working full-time. He graduated at the top of his class, and continually added to his accreditations: Surgical Intensive Care at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, performing dialysis on the kids at Texas ChildrenÃÂs Hospital and Neonatal ICU Level III, but for all practical purposes I was a single Mom, and the boys didnÃÂt know their Dad. Although I was very proud of him, the situation was not good.
I was devastated when both of my Parents died suddenly and totally unexpectedly within a week of each other, just a week after 9/11. I was also emotionally crushed to have seen the towers of WTC fall ÃÂ although the numerous indelible memories of my time there will always be with me. Through all of this, I regained the perspective, ÂLife is too short. Where do we want to be?
My life thus far had been challenging, exciting and extremely happy, but I missed my husband and knew that our boys needed their Dad at this critical stage in their lives, so ... we moved to GodÃÂs Country!!
Manitou Springs, Colorado has given us the happy Âlife in the slow lane that we desperately needed to emotionally thrive and prosper. It is a quirky, fun-loving, small town mountain community, with a big heart and an open mind, nestled at the base of Pikes Peak. We have quiet mild winters, gorgeous busy summers full of Tourists, and jaw-dropping views. Who could ask for more? Not me ...I am blessed. Life is good! Julian & I are divorced now, but best of friends.
Update - June 2013: My two oldest sons are doing well on their own, so my youngest (Trey - 16) and I sold our too big house and headed off for an adventure in Asheville, NC. We've only been here a few days, but we are loving it!
