Ann's Story

Life Hello to the very special class of 1973 and to other friends in high school. WHERE DOES THE TIME GO? How did I get to be 51? There's no sense in lying to YOU, because YOU know full well how old I am! I am now teaching in Ghangzhou, China to university English majors. It's been an interesting career. You know I love to sing, so now I have a captive audience. Today I taught them "The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly." I was married in 1980, and my husband Jim and I "lived off the land" on 18 acres in Dover-Foxcroft. We raised goats, rabbits and pigs, and I had a huge garden, canning and freezing loads of veges. I now call this time "another life." We loved in an honest-to-God log cabin until we built a house right next to it. We adopted a beautiful boy from India whom we named Daniel. He's a Dan, not a Danny. He is a good boy, aged 22 now, but I am very unhappy that he is now serving in Iraq in the army. Please think happy thoughts for him. I feel that his being there is aging me rapidly. Jim and I divorced in 1990. I moved to Bangor and got my M.A. in Speech Communication. After that I started teaching English and speech at most of the colleges around the area. Then I started going to other countries and got "hooked." I've taught in China three times, Korea, Oman and Saudi Arabia. There's no education like living in a foreign country, though it is very trying. Culture shock is not just an expression. The Chinese are my favorite students. I spent 1977 in Hawaii on the island of Oahu in Honolulu and always wanted to go back, but you know how life gets in the way of the best laid plans. So after Dan graduated from high school, off I went and stayed for two years. Sue Sawyer of class of '73 came to visit me, and we h...Expand for more
ave a wonderful picture of the two of us on Waikiki with live birds sitting on are shoulders and arms! I often pine for Oahu and wonder if I made a mistake in leaving. There's been a whole lot of trauma. There is much pain in life. I lost my mother and father when I was 25 and 20, respectively. Divorce was one of the most difficult things, too, but today I am friends with my ex who is a decent guy and is a great Dad to our son. In 2003 I had what I call my meltdown and was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depression. I prefer the latter term, because it isn't euphemistic. It's been a blight on my life, but I respond well to treatment and at least know what is wrong. It isn't something one can "snap out of" and "get over." I am enjoying good health these days, just started what I think will be a nice gig here in China and am optimistic about the future. I HAVE to be optimistic to survive. I have to believe that Dan will come home safely. I have the dearest wish of most parents--that my child will outlive me. I am also very fond of a youngish (I'm bragging) Englishman I met in Oman last year, and I hope that he will play a big part in the play of my life in future years. He is a really solid person. I've had a few impossible boyfriends, and that's putting it nicely. Do you find that it takes less and less to entertain yourself with? I do. I am easily amused. There are a FEW good things about getting older after all! I love to read, watch movies and swim. I'm reading one of the Harry Potter books now. I'm definitely young at heart. One must stay interested in things. That keeps me young, that and young men. Wish you well everyone. Wear the world like a loose garment and enjoy. Ann Fellows
