i am on the far edge of 49, looking back.
this is a story i have been writing for thirty years
organizing, editing, re-editing.
i am looking back.
this is only a story.

i was shaken from my dream
of sweaty days and endless play
to find myself neither here nor there.
i am not sure what woke me
i remember the assassinâs bullet
the hate-filled bomb to a birmingham church
the napalmed girl screaming down a fore...Expand for more

most likely it was as slow
as the changing of my body.
i woke in horror and confusion and anger
only to walk into a parallel dream
of intoxicating herbs and such
and slumber i did
'til dreams of my own making
became nightmares more jumbled than before
my mother took me by the hand,
having recently woken herself,
connected me to wise and caring counsel
and helped me plant a garden
it was two years before i began to talk
and talk i did
until i emptied every secret place
and cried and cried and cried
then the most remarkable thing happened
a beautiful flame-throwing princess cracked open my heart
and i actually threw my lot in with her--
well, slowly i did
together we have built our own dream
a parallel universe
an outsiderâs open-house
built of love and music and food and conversation
and today
i can walk into the woods
stand in awe of the beauty and the horror
and gently whisper to myself
wake up wake up wake up
