Ann's Story

Life Hello...It is now December 2011 and lots has happened since 2009, most notably daughter Layla got married October 23rd in Los Angeles and will be moving to Santa Monica at the end of this month, commuting back to Cambridge/Harvard to defend her PhD in March and (hopefully!!) receiving her degree in May. We have gotten our plane tickets and hotel for May already. Hope to spend a little time in New Jersey after the big event, visiting my brother and his wife in Bridgewater. Layla is now Layla Parast Bartroff; her husband, Jay, also teaches statistics and does research out in California. They have been dating since she met him while completing her Masters degree at Stanford. Many of you who were at the Reunion met Layla, and I am happy to say she is still doing her marathons (ran in NY last fall and I flew up for that...Jay ran too), baking a lot and travelling a lot. I met her in Spain this past October where she presented a paper at a statistical conference at an extension of the University of Zaragosa which was in Jaca, a town in the Pyrenees near the French border. She and Jay will both be here in Texas for Christmas, and Jay's parents, who are wonderful people, will be coming for 4 days...we are having a reception for Layla and Jay the day after Christmas since almost no one from here was able to attend the wedding in California (lots of family did attend, though, and those young people friends who travel coast to coast like we used to go into the city...) Enough for now..Merry Christmas to everyone! ann Hi again! Now it is May 2009, I sold the horse almost a year ago, saw some of you at the SHS reunion in October, went to Sanibel Island (Florida)with Layla in January, New Orleans in December and March (Tennessee Williams Literary Festival)then Cambridge/Boston in April, realized how out of shape I had become (despite exercising) and have begun a major self-improvement effort. Our family will visit the Bahai shrines in Israel next month and I need to be in decent shape for that! Am working hard to get there. Update and add to your profiles, guys! ann After spending some years in New Orleans, NYC, Paris, D.C. and Seattle, somehow I ended up in a rather small town (now growing very fast) almost on the Texas-Mexico border. For the past 13 years I have been teaching English and Literature at Texas State Technical College here in town and before that taught French for six years here....and continued to teach part-time at the University. My husband, Rudy, and I have a daughter who is 18 and a sophomore (junior)at UT-Austin getting a degree in Math (statistics) and, it seems, another in French. Rudy is from Iran and I met him in 1979 (right before the hostage crisis) in Seattle. He has family scattered all over the world and hopes to someday see family still in Iran and finally went back for a visit last summer! (lst in 24 years). He's a Bahai, not Muslim, so it was a bit scarey, but he got back ok. Layla an...Expand for more
d I both went to France, she to visit her exchange student friend, I to the Avignon theatre festival, through Paris, also to London..saw Carol Talbot. I am glad we all went last summer as I felt like things would get worse rather than better internationally. I was glad to see some classmates at the 1988 reunion and hope some of you will be in touch. It is too hot here for me but we have a nice home and it takes 5-10" to get most places in town. My dad died in 1982 but my mom is 92 and living in a retirement home here in town. She would rather be back in New Orleans where she and dad moved after leaving Summit (he was originally from there). Layla wants to come with me to the Reunion in October, she loves NYC, Hope to see you there/hear from you! Best to all..ann Well hello and Happy New Year! It is now the end of 2004, our reunion was over a year ago and fun, our daughter just graduated from UT Austin in statistics and is in Paris celebrating her success at the home of a French girlfriend who has visited us here several times. My mother passed away last Christmas Eve (2003) and I am still hanging in there teaching French at the high school here. This area had a white Christmas this year for the first time in over 100 years (first white anytime, actually), great fun and amazement, but many dead tropical plants around now. Hope to hear from some of you! Hi! Updating once again just to let you know it is now April, Layla has accepted an offer to get a Master's Degree in statistics at Stanford and will be moving out to California over the summer. She got accepted at Rice in Houston but has been dreaming of Stanford since high school, actually, so I guess we are lucky we could get her to finish at UT Austin first....and she loves Austin but wants a change. Wonder where she gets that travel bug from?? I bought a horse (palomino mare) last summer (being that I am in Texas) and everything was fine until she threw me Feb. 5th. Luckily I am ok (broke two toes and lots of bruises...do I think I am a young person or what?) Well, I got back on her several times so far but am being very cautious about where I ride her. Hope some of you write or come visit (after school is over! I plan a short trip to NYC first week of June to see Danzell Washington in Julius Caesar++) May have an extra ticket! Be in touch....fondly, ann Oh dear, now it is summer of 2008 and I am planning to come to the reunion in October, and celebrating my retirement (finally) from teaching at the end of this month. 25 years in this town plus 5 years as a TA in Seattle, 5 years teaching English in France and two years teaching in New Orleans. That is it...je suis fatiguee!!! I will be in Maine, Boston and Washington, D.C. in June, July (daughter Layla now studying at Harvard on a Ph.D. scholarship in Biostatistics...she was able to visit with Beth Reisen!) and then up to NYC/Boston/NJ in September and October. Anyone want to buy that horse??? love, ann

This was Eleanor Roosevelt's car...meant to be a modest choice during time of the Depression. Spent the day today at home relaxing and getting a bit caught up on some future planning..
