Ann's Story

Ann Prescott Dougherty -- 40 Years in a Nutshell. From CHS to MCC to UCSB (but spent the year at the University of Bergen, Norway) to UC Berkeley¿and graduated in 1973. Got married in 1974, (Richard, University Librarian at Cal); went back to Cal to get a Masters in library science. We formed a publishing company and created several library-related journals, Moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1978 (Richard became Director, University of Michigan Libraries) and I¿ve been working in publishing to a greater or lesser degree ever since. We sold two journals in the 1990s, but still have the last small one. Call me a part-time editor/publisher. No longer have a desire to live in California although it¿s great to visit, especially in winter. We raised two daughters. Both left the state to go to college. Katie took off to North Carolina to Wake Forest and then to UNC Chapel Hill for an MPH/Nutrition. She¿s a registered dietitian and actually ran the WIC program out in Vista for a year. She lived in La Jolla and in Carlsbad. Her husband is a US Navy JAG and they currently live in Naples, Italy. Emily wanted the big city so went to Boston University and got a Communications/Advertising degree ¿ but came back to Ann Arbor and became a certified pastry chef. She specializes in cakes of all sorts at Zingerman¿s Bakehouse (just Google it). She married her high school boyfriend last year. He did four years of Army time (Germany, Iraq) and is now finishing school. Just to add to the confusion¿my husband is 16 years older than I am. He married the first time at 19, has three children from that marriage who are only 5 to 8 years younger than I am. They are married with kids, some the same age as ours. Most of those grandchildren are married with babies also, so he became a great grandfather four times over by the age of 74. We have large family gatherings (20 or so people), sometimes at his ex-wife¿s house ¿ she¿s happily remarried too. It¿s con...Expand for more
fusing to outsiders, but we all get along fine, even with sibling squabbles, and have lots of fun. For the past ten years I have increased my involvement with US Figure Skating. I started as a volunteer for the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club (did you know my mother was a well-known skater/coach before she had kids?) when my daughter skated and it all just evolved from there. Turns out I¿m pretty much a born organizer so I run numerous large skating competitions, be they local, regional, or national with anywhere from 500 to 800 skaters. I¿ve served on the national board of directors, numerous committees, been president of local and regional clubs etc¿.Every bit of it is volunteer work and it can be all-consuming. Of course, it¿s free labor. I¿m slowly cutting back. Why cut back? So we can travel. Richard is retired now (he¿s 74 but doesn¿t look or act it) so we have the time and health to do it. I think when you¿ve grown up a military brat and had to move around, it just stays in your blood. I¿m proud to say that I have visited every continent, but certainly not every country (although I have set foot on Greenland), and have more I¿d like to see again. However, as I get older, I find it is people, not places, I wish to visit. And Ann Arbor is really nice if anyone wants to come this way. Meanwhile, my daily life, when not traveling, means going to work part time, playing tennis several times a week, going to the gym, doing yoga regularly, reading lots of books (or listening them while driving, cooking), attending skating meetings, and living on email. I know, Facebook is next; I just haven¿t done it yet for fear of being sucked in to one more thing. For those who remember the whole Prescott clan...Caroline lives in Florida, Jim is in Encinitis, Pam in Carlsbad, and Alison in Jackson Hole. Both parents have died, family home has been sold. So I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. Ann Prescott Dougherty
