Ann's Story
I have been blessed with a wonderful life. I married Jeff Bennon (CHS, class of '64) in 1970. 40 years have gone by very quickly, and now we have 2 sons and one daughter, and 5 incredible grandchildren. I spent 20 years as a high school English teacher, 2 years as an assistant principal in charge of discipline (the job from hell), 8 years as a K-8 school principal, one year as Assistant Superintendent, and I retired in 2000 as a school district Superintendent.
I stayed retired for about 3 months and for the past ten years I have been working 3 days a week as Assistant Director of a small, fabulous, K-8 charter school. I guess I just can't stay away from kids and public education.
I never left Tucson, and Jeff and I love the beauty of the desert. July and August can be brutal, but the rest of the year can't be beat! We love taking our dogs for walks in the river beds, and Jeff runs and bikes long distances. I love my bike, also, but don't often use it. Unfortunately, I do more reading and quilting than exercising. . . and it shows, unfortunately.
School
I had a wonderful time in High School, but the pressure to fit in and be cool was enormous. I really never fit in, and I definitely was never cool. All-in-all, I am glad I don't have to do it all over again. My fri...Expand for more
ends were very special to me and I am grateful for their support. I miss them.
College
College is a blur in my mind. The sorority, the parties, the all-nighters, the ring-passing for a short lived engagement, all blend into one crazy impression. Did I really get my degree? How did that happen?
Workplace
I have been fortunate in my work life. I started teaching English at Flowing Wells High School and spent most of my working life there with some wonderful, dedicated people. My students were the best! I also taught night classes for Pima Community College. I got my Master's degree in administration and became the high school Assistant Principal in charge of discipline. That was not a great position for me, the ultimate softie. I left Flowing Wells in 1990 to become Principal of Mary Dill, a K-8 school in a rural community 20 miles out of Tucson. I became Assistant Superintendent and then Superintendent of that school district, Altar Valley School District. In 2000 I retired, but after 3 months I learned I needed to get back to kids. I now work 3 days a week at a K-8 charter school in Tucson. When my husband, Jeff, decides to retire from teaching we will both call it quits with work and just play all day. Who am I kidding. I don't think either one of us will ever retire.
