Anne's Story
When I left Stony Brook in 1976, I hitchhiked to Indiana to visit a friend from NY, and I ended up staying here. It's awesome! I married a guy, Ed VandeSande, from Rochester, NY. We live in a log cabin at the edge of Lake Monroe, adjacent to a wildlife refuge. We have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 fish, and 2 eagles. The eagles live down the hill from my home, and they are breeding this year.
I work during the school year as a Housemom at a fraternity on the IU campus. During the summer, I do wildlife rescue, rehab, and release for Wildcare, a wild animal rescue organization. We even had one of my eagl...Expand for more
es in last year- He had gotten into brambles, and his feathers were so matted he couldn't fly. We had to knock him out to remove the brambles, and we also removed some damaged tail feathers, which made him unable to fly. He's all better now, and back with his mate.
Ed has just completed a run with the local arts council. He had been with the Red Cross pre-9/11,and worked at ground zero for a couple of weeks immediately after the attacks. He retired from there right after Hurricane Katrina. Then he worked for the United Way, and then the arts council. He may go back into emergency management.
