Anthony (Tony)'s Story
College
I started college in 1978, but withdrew in 1980 because of work. I always wished that I had finished what I started.
In 1991, I did just that! I worked full-time, and went back to school full-time. I graduated from Dalton College in 1993 with my AS Degree. I was a pre-med major! I always wanted to become a physician.
In 1995, I graduated from UTC with my BS Degree in Biology, and my minor in Chemistry.
Unfortunately, I don't do very well on standardized tests, and taking the medical college admissions test (MCAT) was no exception. I had the grades to get into Medical School (3.47), and I did the volunteer work at a local hospital. Medical Schools don't, however, tell you that the MCAT is the foremost "weeding out" tool they use. If you don't do well on it, you don't get in! It's that simple! I didn't get in!
Had I of known that, I would have majored in computer science or art! Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, and the Monday morning quarterback never won a single game. Life goes on!
I am glad I finally graduated though!
Workplace
I worked at the local newspaper in Chattanooga from 1982-1999, and then again in 2001. It was really fun prior to the company merger in 1999. I had a blast! After the company merger life changed for everyone in a somewhat disastrous fashion. Suddenly, the term "24/7/365-on call" became a way of life for all involved! Most of us moved on due to that & the new owner's continuous worship of the almighty dollar. I couldn't honestly ask the people who worked for me to do twice as much work for half the pay. Something about integrity and respect was lost in the merger plans, so I, as well as m...Expand for more
any others, said 'C 'ya!
In 2002, I finally got to use my B.S. Biology/Chemistry degree. I now run a Polysomnographic Testing Facility (Sleep Study Lab) in Dalton, GA. I love it! I actually get to help people for once. The rewards are far greater than any I received from any of my former jobs. I suppose it's the old "I now have a career as opposed to a job" adage!
Whatever it is, my workplace is now something I look forward to doing each day, as opposed to regretting! Now I have 2 full time sleep jobs. One is in East Ridge and the other is in Ft. Oglethorpe.
In 2005 during an all classes reunion at the old Chattanooga Valley High School I met Tina Conaway Massey for the first time in many years. We first met in Jr. High back in 1972.
She was then divorced, and I was still single. We dated for 2 years. In 2007, during a trip to Boston, New England, and Maine I proposed to her in front of the Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine. Our tour bus driver was the only one on earth who knew my intentions that day. She said yes!
Exactly 1 year and 1 day later we were married. We went back to Maine for our honeymoon. We saw 18 Lighthouses that trip, including the Nubble Lighthouse, and we saw our tour bus driver again. Later that year we went back to Boston and Maine, and this time we took our mom's. For both it was their first time on an airplane. They loved New England, as do we.
We even got a house and a rotten dog to complete the picture for Norman Rockwell to paint. Ironically, the thing I ran from the most when I was younger is the thing I embrace the most now. Love with Commitment! Who'd 'a thunk it?
Life is really good now!
