At the age of 34. He's taken a couple of years off here, a couple off there. He transferred schools. He takes classes on a part-time basis. He has no job. To the people who don't know him, all that might make Tony Dubois seem like something of a slacker. To the people who do know him, Tony Dubois is nothing short of amazing. The Nashua resident has Becker muscular dystrophy, a degenerative disease that primarily affects voluntary muscles. Tony was diagnosed at the age of 8. He was in a wheelchair by the time he was 12, and was put on a respirator at 27. He cannot walk, has little use of his arms and sometimes has a hard time talking or even breathing because of the tube in his throat. He has diabetes, and the function of his heart has to be monitored regularly for failure. Funny thing. Talk to people who know Tony, and they'll tell you his heart is the strongest thing about him. ...Expand for more
"I've never met someone so positive about life when so many things are going against him," said Anthony Curtis, a friend who has known Tony since they were in sixth grade. Tony has managed to live as full a life as possible. He goes to concerts, movies and restaurants, and has friends over to play cards. "I think it's incredible that he has the drive and willingness to do it," said Judith Brodeur, one of Tony's nurses. "I've known other people in similar situations who are content to say 'I can't do it, I can't adapt, there's nothing I can do.' And they don't. Tony has the drive to say, 'Yes, I'm handicapped, but I'm going to live my life as normally as I possible can.'" . "I know few people with more determination or courage, and with his unique experience and perspective, I believe he will be an asset to any law school he attends." -- Gregory Fanaras, M.D., Elliot Hospital, Tony Dubois' pulmonologist . It takes Tony about four hours to get ready for his classes at Southern New Hampshire University. He has nurses and aides to help him around the clock in the apartment his father built for him in their house. He needs the assistance of note takers in class and transcribers for papers and tests because he has such limited use of his hands. It hasn't stopped him. Tony will graduate with a degree in business, as an honor student with a 3.7 grade-point average. He's a member of two academic honor societies and hopes to be accepted to the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover, Mass. "I'd like to help people with disabilities to fight for what they need to go to school, get jobs, be like everybody else," he said. Tony has collected letters of recommendation from his dean, one of his doctors and even SNHU president.".
