Anthony's Story
Life
. I have made a lot of decisions over the years for some
stupid reasons, but they worked out very good for me. When I was 17years old I joined the U.S.Naval reserve so that I could wear a uniform and get free drinks at Tootie's bar. That decision kept me far from Viet Nam.In the service I met a friend who convinced me to take the test for the Nassau County Police Dept. I got out of active duty in Dec.
1968 and joined the Police Department in January 1969. I was a foot cop, then a sergeant. I was supervisor of recruit training, then an investigator in Applicant Investigation. I became a Detective Sergeant in Internal Affairs Unit for 10 years. I was then supervisor of Emergency Services Bureau for 3 1/2 years then back to IAU. I retired in Jan. 2001 with 32 years of service. I was able to buy credit for the 3 years of active duty in the Navy and retired with credit for 35 years. During my time on the job, I went to college and although I got about 110 credits, I never got my degree. One of my ironies is that I took the job with the Poice Department so I could work outdoors and not be pent up and yet I spent 25 years working mainly indoors. I spent most of my career writing reports. I married Laraine Halka, a 1965 graduate of F.K.Lane in 1967 and we have a 48year old son and 45 year old daughter. My son and daughter married a brother and sister from New Port Richey Florida. He has two daughters from his first marraige and two from his second, and my daughter h...Expand for more
as one girl. Unfortunately both their marraiges failed. As a result, the only way to see our granddaughters with any regularity was to move to Florida. We had lived in Rockville Centre, N.Y. for 26 years and just sold our house and moved here in Feb. 2002. We' lived in a rented house on the Gulf of Mexico but couldn't find a suitable house to buy. We eventually built a 4700 sq. ft. house in Spring Hill on 1 3/4 acres. I've always loved boating and fishing. We now keep our 34 foot Rinker at our Yacht Club on the Gulf. This year I am Commodore of the Yacht Club. I started a dump truck business to give a job to my son who was laid off from American Airlines. Eventually I had 3 giant 70,000 pound trucks. Getting drivers was a nightmare and I hated driving the one truck. When my son got re-hired by American Airlines, I sold all the trucks, luckily, just before fuel prices went so high and construction died here in Florida. When I was in New York, I was a workaholic. I always worked two jobs and for 8 years had my own construction company. My dad passed away about 12 years ago and my 91 year old mom , who lived with us until 2 years ago, recently passed away leaving a hole in my heart. I have six grandchildren from 16 years to 5 months old . First year of the baby boomers, I'm collecting Social Security. Life is great. 49 years with same same woman who has kept herself beautiful and just recently came out of her shell becoming the best Commodorable my club has ever seen.
