Anthony's Story

Life Where to begin, it has been for the better part of 12 years since any of you saw me. Well, first, I have really undergone some life changes (don't fret, all body parts are intact and attached). Rather, it has been an emotional, spiritual, and intellectual journey for me. That being said I changed my name to Jonas Anton Feinstein. It was not a whimsical or capricious decision. Upon my father passing away when I was 22 years old, my fantastic step-father wanted to adopt me. So, if I was to change my last name, why don't I go for the full monte of name changing? I figured that the name Tony really had no intellectual or emotional connection to the person whom I feel I trully am. So, I changed the name and it works well for me. So what did I do upon leaving Wasson in the late winter of 1993? I was granted permission to graduate early and take classes at UCCS. When I quickly became aware of my newly awarded autonomy, i.e. there was no attendance in college, I quickly took to skipping class and going snowboarding up at Loveland Ski Area. Needless to say, my grades reflected my enthusiasm for snowboarding or school, whichever way you choose to look at it! So, that spring of snowboarding, transcended into 5 years of living in Breckenridge and Vail and hurling myself off of every concievable cliff, cornice, or jump into the fleeting hopes of being the next snowboarding rockstar. Nothing really matriculated, sure I got a few free trips, some gear, but nothing in terms of a salary. Upon seeing a couple of friends forever injuring themselves and my growing awareness that at 24 I should not get out of bed feeling physically like a 42 year old, I knew something would need to change. So, I moved to Fort Collins and started my intellectual cultivation in earnest. I enrolled at a great community colle...Expand for more
ge and started off modestly (2-3 classes each in remedial mathematics and writing). In 2004 I graduated from Colorado State University with an undergratudate degree in Forest Biology. Currently, I am a second year master's candidate in Forest Ecology at Colorado State University. Instead of hurling myself off of cliffs, I am hurling myself into mathematical and statistical models, which consequently is a far more sustainable enterprise, both physically and financially. I love it, I love talking scientific jargon, analyzing data, and writing (and to think that I graduated from Wasson with a CGPA of 1.7)! I am aspiring to the Ph.D level, and who knows I could be one of those exhorbanantly salaried liberal professors teaching your children in the Natural Resources field someday! I am getting married to a just a fantastic gal this fall(2005) in Moab, Utah. When I am not glued to the computer analyzing data, teaching students forestry, or out collecting data in the field, and my fiancee is not teaching junior highschool students, we are fanatical backcountry skiers, climbers/mountaineers, and whitewater canoers. In the hopes that we can make the 15 or 20 year reunion, I thought it would be good to get you all up to speed on me. I hope everyone is doing well and doing exactly what they need to be doing right now. Cheers! Jonas FYI~ The photos? (Now) A self portrait of me 60 feet up in a ponderosa pine, catching northern goshawk nestlings, while the crew down on the ground is banding, taking measurements, and drawing blood from nestlings I send down. This is work I have been doing for the past 5 years for the research branch of the U.S. Forest Service, up on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. (Then)My best man Ryan Miller and I backcountry skiing outside of Aspen, Adios!! Jonas
