Toni. (Antoinette)'s Story

After working for a number of years in private industry (roughly 14!!) I finally found what I wanted -needed- to do as a career while I grew up. It took awhile, but I had lots of unique experiences along the way that I otherwise would have missed out on... it was worth the trip. That special niche for me was finding away to serve my country without becoming a soldier myself: a job as a civilian for the Department of Defense working in the field of acquisition and contracting. I had the opportunity to support both reserve and regular army soldiers over my 24-1/2 years of service, retiring in the fall of 2011. The return on my investment of time spent interning to journeyman level in the government included taking dozens of classes, both locally and outstate, while at the same being placed in the work environment to get on the job experience. I met the most wonderful people from all walks of life. I successfully completed undergraduate education (graduating Magna Cum Laude) from Wayne State U, and went on to complete my masters degree at the college I once dreamed of attending but never thought I would, Lawrence Technological University. Through work I was given opportunities to travel to Washington -both D.C. and the state, where on a perfect day I was able to see both Mount Ranier and the Olympic mountain range in the same panoramic view. It was breathtaking! I also spent quite a bit of time in Virginia but my most memorable trips were to South America - specifically Bolivia. It must have been destiny. Mom had saved various papers and projects done over the years, and in looking through them she found in my school work from seventh grade world history a research paper I had written about the country of Bolivia -complete with maps of the region and information on the altiplano ! What fun. I worked for the U.S. Army from 1987-2011, serving as a Systems Analyst, Management Analyst, Contract Specialist and Procurement Analyst, and Procurement Management Analyst I had the trying but interesting experience of working on mainframe systems (a whole new world and language for me), as it related to Army contracting and data tracking. Additionally, I worked in contracting on projects that included the HMMWV and retro-fit armor HMMWV programs; Army watercraft vessel and communications (C4ISR) upgrades; various foreign military sales programs, and during the five years prior to retirement I worked for the Program Executive Office, Joint Combat & Combat Support Systems, parent office of the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program, as well as the tactical vehicle programs, and too many more to name. ** Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in 1997; Magna Cum Laude Senior Scholar Award Otto Feinstein Honorary Mention Award for Excellence in Writing for undergraduate thesis ** Masters Degree in Business Management from Lawrence Technical University in 2003. I am married to my best friend who I have been with since 1978; no children, but many pets over the years. At the first writing of this we had a beautiful Siberian Huskey senior citizen (Jake), (deceased 2013) and three cats: a tabby named Toby (deceased 11/2015) who was a snuggle buddy-always there when you need some loving; a black terror named Sam who way out grew his sweet little kitten self into a big kitty that is afraid of his own shadow--he really is the perfect Halloween cat, :-) (2013), and lastly, but not least, a sweetheart calico named Holly, for the time of year she adopted us, Christmas (2014). After finally conceding to surgery, I had my left knee replaced in April 2013. It made a huge difference for the positive. So much so that I joined my husband, two of his siblings and spouses, and took that knee on the road in the fall. Traveling by bus, then train we went to the Grand Canyon for a few days...what an incredible occurrence of nature! We moved on via a mini van which fortunately had some under the floor storage, as between six adult bodies, six pieces of luggage and several carry on bags and totes, we were packed like sardines as we traveled through Jerome for lunch on our way to a couple of days in Sedona. Lovely, lovely, lovely! Perfect weather, beautiful area. From there one more night in Arizona, in Phoenix, then a plane home. A really great week in the company of good friends and family. Thanks to my husband's job, which gave him annual travel to medical education related conferences, I have had the opportunity to see several great cities in the United States among them Philadelphia (100 degrees in the shade), San Antonio and it's historical sites, and San Diego whet I was able to ride horseback on the beach, drive into the mountains for a day, go to the zoo, etc., just to name a few. Then there was.the most wonderful and beautiful Newfoundland!! Twice!! Newfoundland, if it is not on your bucket list of places to visit, but you love nature and light houses and tiny towns and villages where homemade is a lifestyle; and where you can almost feel the fog wrap around you-gentle fingers of mist touching your face and hands inviting you to join it., you should add it. If you prefer, it is a fabulous place for hiking and nature photography, where one day you will be watching the whales and the next an ice burg will float by. . . you really should add Newfoundland to your travel wishes. Your visit choices also include lovely partial shoreline drives that will take you through many small towns where seafood is served fresh from the north Atlantic and will have flavor unlike any other. You can also choose to observe an archeological dig in progress in the town of Fairyland, or take a side trip to one of many island light houses. If any of this touches you then this is the country for you to visit. After a second trip there this year, 12 years after the first, I found I still had a difficult letting go and heading home. And I have not even yet traveled the width and breadth of this lovely country. The year 2014 was super special in that after many years of talking about travel with my sister and her husband, we finally got to Scotland. Wow! For a first trip we opted for a small tour group and coach.... and saw so much in a week! We landed in Glasgow and spent a few hours there walking and bussing around to see the sights and partly observing a large organized group who were vying for a YES vote on the separation of Scotland from the U.K.... the vote was held during our time in country (it did not pass).. However, it did make it an even a more exciting time to be there. Additonally we spent the night at a lodge in Inverness, travelled the Highlands which come by their name honestly, stopped at one of many scotch distillary's; traveled to the awes...Expand for more
ome Isle of Skye and walked the gardens there; We toured by boat beautiful Loch Lommand, and walked the shore of Loch Ness- no sea monster that day! We went to St. Andrews and Ron did the tour which he said was the best he had heard and been part of. He was so enthusiastic that I was sorry I opted out...instead sitting in the club house and people watching. By chance we were there for another major vote - the passing of acceptance of women to membership in St. Andrews! There were stops at five castles and the battle ground and historical site of the battle at Culloden, all before arriving at The castle and town of Edinburgh. Eight days were just enough to wet ones taste buds... There is so much more to see and do! Maybe someday well get back. We own a year round lake house between Chelsea and Jackson, Michigan, which is our get away,. We are working on firming up our intention of making it a retirement home. It is close to my sister and her husband who have a place on the same lake just up the road, And it is not far from all of one's basic needs, the city of Jackson's and it's restaurants, ice cream parlor, theatre's, and shopping. All in all a good location. I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a financially disasterous idea. As it turns out, they were half right. I could have done both-had a career and a writing past time, but who knew. Our parents, aunts, etc., were always right!! Maybe it's not too lat, afterall I did a ton of research and writing for my job, why not for my own enjoyment now?! I still love sports: football, hockey, baseball, basketball....... just like in school..... but now I need to add soccer, since I have a niece who is quite a soccer jock (while still being a girly girl!), and is playing competitively on a travel team. At 15 she has added volleyball to her repertoire. (I think she needs to be careful, one bad twist the wrong way and she will be benched from both sports! Nervous aunt). At 17 Riley's sister, Rachel, is now driving - oh my!! :-o - and working part time, and trying to figure out who she is and who she wants to be when she graduated next year. Where has the time gone!! Both are academically smart and headed for great things. In the meantime our 20+ nephew has recently gotten into the insurance business after several years of going to school and working as an EMT. He is much happier with a five day a week job, with normal hours and real lunch breaks. Very happy for him...with his outgoing personality he should do well. The eldest nephew and his fiancee just moved to Nevada to be someplace warmer and drier. A black ice coated driveway slip and fall accident sent him in the ER, and off his feet, literally, for several months while he healed a leg that pretty much shattered and is now held together with plates and screws and metal bars. The Michigan cold has been agony for him...hopefully the Nevada weather will be more agreeable and minimize his pain. Meanwhile his younger sister is heading into sophomore year at MSU, studying zoology, etc, with a goal of veterinary medicine. She is a real charmer with near every critter she encounters. This beautiful young lady lives with her also very smart (also going tho MSU), good looking and doting finance (who else would arrange to take his princess on a horseback ride decked out in their prom formal finery...the real Prince charming!!), and together they have made me a great aunt, three years ago. Charming family, happy and working hard to accomplish all they set out to do! Bless them all. May they be as fulfilled in their life wanderings and experiences as have I. On a personal note: I have a low tolerance for most TV reality shows. I love good comedies, old movies, and suspense / mystery's.... but really prefer to read. I read suspense, mystery, light humor non-fiction; biographies and autobiographies; history, especially local (Detroit and surrounds), American history, and yes, still poetry. And pretty much anything printed on paper, though I now also read off my Kindle, a Christmas gift last year. I was very reluctant, and it took a couple of months and a free mystery to try it. Yes, I do enjoy it very much more than I expected. But it will never replace the books I have collected over these many years. I enjoy cooking, some baking, and creating my own combinations and flavors. I guess I am, loosely speaking, collecting cookbooks; of all types -foods and flavors and international cuisine - as I now have enough to fill a fairly large bookcase. Add prints from family and friends that I'm workiing to save into sleeves and ring binders before they become unreadable, and you could say I have is a micro mini library of recipes. Additionally I am a crafter, for lack of a better word. My abundance was in taking pictures...nothing formal, but lots and lots AND lots of paper memories, and now a plethora of digital ones too. Shortly before retirement I was introduced to paper crafts and took several classes in a variety of art forms involving paper. I have crocheted many an Afghan and lap throw over the years, and embroidered, cross stitched, and creweled my way through many a canvas. I also spent several years working in the clay medium, doing ceramics, most of which ended up as gifts. I hope to get back to clay by working with an artist friend in St. Clair, MI in the near future. My best friend would tell you I'm rather introverted, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as outgoing. I still love to dance.... and once again have a great dancing partner. I love to garden, both flowers (especially roses) and vegetables; I love to just sit and watch the water go by -- especially if the freighters are on the move. I love to watch the birds come too out many feeders...the cardinal couples so carefully watching out for each other, the song birds and the chickadees, the nuthatch and the various woodpeckers-downy and hairy, red head and red breast, and the ground feeding flicker...and so many more. I love to watch as the swallows soar above the water catching bugs as they soar by. I love watching a fish jump out of the water while I count the rings that the impact makes. And to watch the turtles peek out from behind a lilly pad, and to listen to the frogs singing in the twilight, and to watch the bats soaring as dusk moves in, and then the fire-fly''s blinking in the dark..... I still think romance is alive; I get excited by a beautiful card.... love to find flowers waiting for me when I get home.... enjoy a good cocktail or glass of wine when able, and still am grateful for the life I've lived....complete with all of its ups and downs. I hope it all goes on for many years to come.
