Arleen's Story
After Mohawk madness, I proceeded to UMass, where I stumbled around with various majors and managed to finally escape after 5 years in zoology and environmental science. Worked at Castaways Lounge(!) in Whately and did cable splicing during summers with Deb Sluter to help pay college. Spent a semester at Woods Hole Oceanographic where I confirmed oceanography wasnt going to work out since my month long research expedition in the Sargasso Sea produced month long seasickness. Moved to Boston and got a research assistant job at the New England Aquarium. vironmental Protection where Gov Romney appointed me Commissioner during the last 18 months of his 4 year term and the last 18 months of my 18 year tenure. Where do you go from there? Consulting! I'm now VP at ERG Inc (Lexington MA) working on EPA and NOAA projects on a variety of national policy issues, mostly ocean and coastal management, plus climate issues. I travel to SanFran, DC, Charleston SC, Hawaii, American Samoa and other fun places frequently. Our son is a freshman at Tufts University (where my husband teaches) and I am gradually becoming accustomed to empty nester status. I enjoy biking (including commuting to work by bike), xc skiing, gardening, birding, traveling, and enjoying all that life offers!
