Arlene's Story
Life
I have been married for 17 years. We have a 13-year-old son who is the joy of my life. While most of my family remained in Darlington, I moved to Florence during college and still reside there. I have been active in community theatre, both on and off stage, for over 20 years.
School
Biggest crush: David
Teacher who inspired me the most: Elizabeth Ervin - she made me believe it didn't matter where you came from; what mattered was what you did with your life.
Would I do it all over again: Yes. There are so many things I would do differently.
College
I attended Francis Marion College and received my B.A. in English. It took me a bit longer than most because I worked full-time for most of my college life to put myself through school. I took my last class (French - yuck!) in Spring of 1989 and received my degree that May.
While at Francis Marion, I became involved in the theatre, which created a life-long love of performing. I also met my husband there and we still perform together.
Workplace
I am c...Expand for more
urrently the librarian and financial assistant for a private school in Florence. Previously, I spent 13 years in the corporate world as the office manager of a computer company. I left this job when my husband got word he would be deployed to Afghanistan for a year. I felt I needed to be with our son and was able to secure a job at his school. While I miss the salary of an executive position, I truly love the work I do. And the old saying that "money does not buy happiness" is certainly true for me. I am much more happy and content now on a private school teacher's salary than I was making really great money. My family is also happier to have me around more.
Military
While I have never been in the military myself, I am a military wife. My husband works full-time for the National Guard and spent 14 months in Afghanistan. He should not have to do another tour any time soon. While it is difficult at times to be the wife of a military man, my husband loves his job and is dedicated to this state and this country.
