Arlene's Story

Life Hi everyone. I'm a retired English professor (William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ) now living in Santa Rosa, CA. Deep in my heart, I always knew I was a California girl, though I don't surf. And I must confess that Rockaway Beach is much nicer than Bodega Bay. Santa Rosa is 1 1/2 hours north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sonoma County, a wine country region sometimes called "the new Provence." We live on the side of the Sonoma Mountain overlooking the Valley of the Moon. Our nearest neighbors are: red-tailed hawks, owls, hummingbirds, quail (like pigeons only prettier), jack rabbits, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and the occasional snake and scorpion. Our trees are nothing like whatever grew in Brooklyn - madrone, manzanita, toyon. Larry and I will soon celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. I have a son in San Francisco and a daughter and beloved (only) grandson on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Our pets are Gabrielle, a 12-year-old bichon, and Gatsby, a Turkish angora cat who prowls and hunts all night, then returns to eat and sleep all day. I write poetry, essays, and short stories. Nearly 300 pieces have been published in the past 15 years in such diverse places as The New York Times and T...Expand for more
rue Romance as well as many charming but obscure literary publications. I'm working on a book, too: My Life on Hemlock Street: A Brooklyn Memoir. Several stories are available online right now, and if you're really interested, I can forward the websites. An essay about Samuel J. Halperin, our history teacher and my mentor, was just published in an anthology: Letters to My Teacher. Volunteering fills much of my time. I tutor 5th graders at a rural, 150-year-old elementary school and am a mentor to a 12-year-old girl. I'm also way too involved in the Sonoma County Book Festival, inviting authors, managing the PR, and enjoying the challenge. this year it is the only book festival in all of northern California and we're being besieged by authors who want to read. I'm still in close touch with Ruthe McKeown, my best friend from first grade at P.S. 159. Last summer we visited Jane (Adams) Bouchard and her husband Paul in Saratoga Springs. Lenny Berman and his wife Toby will be visiting us in Santa Rosa in June. Lenny & I are contemplating a 50th Anniversary Edition of Senior Echoes. Want to submit something? Of course I'm looking forward to our reunion, though I can't possibly be old enough, and neither can you.
