Armando's Story

Life Biography: ARMANDO CEPEDA-Artist/Writer/Peace Activist Armando Cepeda of Yorba Linda, California was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. He is the oldest of ten children. His siblings are: Arturo, Saul, Raymond, Ruben, Theresa, Martha, Mario, David and Ricardo. After graduating from Irvin H.S. in 1971, Armando joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Norton AFB in San Bernardino, California. While in the Air Force he attended San Bernardino Valley College and graduated in 1976 with a degree in Biology. He married in 1975. He continued his studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara while raising his family. He worked briefly for the State of California Parks and Recreation Department as a seasonal park ranger at the state beaches of Santa Barbara and also as a teaching assistant in the biology department of Santa Barbara City College. Armando changed careers in 1982 after winning a scholarship to attend the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He began his graphic design career working for NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Over a span of ten years, Armando worked for other aerospace agencies such as Lockheed/Martin. In 1996 Armando received a teaching credential and began teaching design and illustration for the Riverside County Office of Education and at Platt College in Ontario, Ca. He presently teaches at Lincoln High School in Riverside, California and enjoys working with at-risk youth. He was recently selected 2007-2008 Teacher of the Year. f students, parents and teachers create an entire colorful mural in under three hours with no previous art skills necessary. He conducts this highly energized motivational art program at schools and education conferences throughout the United States and Mexico. Armando also enjoys writing short stories about growing up in El Paso and other fiction works. He has yet to be published but looks forward to having his first book out in the near future. Armando has designed educational posters for: CABE: The California Association for Bilingual Education, The Association of Mexican-American Educators, Southwest Voters Registration and Educaton Project,University of California-Riverside Tomas Rivera Conference, 1999/2003 Riverside Fiesta de la Familia, The bishop's office of Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino, U.S. Department of Education, Migrant Education office, Washington D.C., 2005 Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Conference, Sacramento, Ca. Armando's personal fine art projects primarily focus on Mexican culture, labor and education and has exhibited throughout Southern California. Armando is a proud U.S. Air Force veteran with both sons, Armando Marcos and Mario presently serving in the U.S. Navy and Air Force. As a community activist he is designing motivational art and posters that focuses on human rights, peace and the anti-war movement. Armando and wife, Ellin have recently completed building an artists retreat in the beautiful highlands of Michoacan, Mexico where they will soon move to and start an artist's cooperative community with local artisans. Armando is available for speaking engagements, mural workshops and poster commissions.
