Arthur's Story
Hello everyone from the Class Of 1976! I hope everyone is doing well and has had a great life. My thoughts are with all the ones that have passed on already.
Well here's what I've been doing all these years: After graduation, I went into the army and became an air traffic control tower operator at Forney Army Airfield, Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, for a couple of years as an enlisted person, i.e. private. During training for air traffic control school at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, I ran into fellow MHS classmate Art Grunow who was there for the same training. I also ran into MHS '75 classmate Kent Gurney who was a military policeman. Then in 1978, I went back to Ft. Rucker where I graduated from helicopter flight school with the rank of warrant officer. This is a special military rank that is between the enlisted ranks and commissioned officer ranks. I was sent to South Korea for a year where I flew a small helicopter called an OH-58 Kiowa (civilian Jet Ranger) as a scout in a cavalry unit that had AH-1 attack helicopters. From there I spent two years at Ft. Benning, Georgia, as a UH-1 Huey helicopter pilot carrying infantry soldiers, etc. around for training.
In 1982, I got out of the army and went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where I graduated with a Professional Aeronautics degree. From there, I went to the University of Florida and graduated with a Crimin...Expand for more
al Justice degree in 1985. I went back to California and became a deputy sheriff with the Orange County Sheriff's Department and then the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department.
In 1987, I got hired by the FBI and became a Special Agent. I spent 25 years investigating kidnappings, drugs, terrorism, bank robberies, etc. out of offices in Tupelo, Mississippi, San Jose, California and Jackson, Tennessee, which is where I am now retired with my wife Mona and our 21 year old daughter Dana. In 2008/09, I also spent almost 5 months in Baghdad, Iraq, helping to train and advise the various Iraqi federal law enforcement agencies in investigating Iraqi criminal cases. At the end of 2012 I retired.
I've been spending the time since then traveling throughout the US by car, working on my wife's family home in Shannon, Mississippi, and flying helicopters here and there but with no full time employment just yet, to be honest. I still have to figure out if I need to give up on flying as a profession, or try to get a job working as a fraud/security professional for some bank or company. I don't want to move the family by the way, so "time will tell what I want to do when I grow up."
I hope we can all get together sometime soon for a reunion. I'm willing to help but of course I'm here in Tennessee, but I do go back to California at least once a year to see family. Take care all and feel free to send me a message.
