Audrey's Story
What's been happening? Long story but here goes! As you know we all graduated in 1978. After graduation, I attended NC A&T for 3 years and then there was no more money. So I left school and moved off campus . I got a job and worked at several places like Hardees, Amoco, Kinder Care. While at A&T I met Wallace Thomas who I married in 1982. We have 4 children, Wallace Jr.(Brandon) age 26, Kandiis age 22, Wallisa age 21 and Jasmine age 19. I have one grand daughter, Kaydiin who is almost 9 months. I started working for Moses Cone Hospital in 1986 and worked there until 2004 In 2001 I returned to school and graduated with a BSW in Social Work. I thought I could get a job with the hospital as a social worker but that didn't happen. They told me that I was not qualified and that you had to have a Masters of Social Work. nds when they didn't have anyone, I was the one doing the job. Then they hired someone who had less hospital experience as I did and didn't know a thing about maternity ad oh she did not have a Masters of Social Work. She had a masters in something else. They had the nerve to give her my name as a resource. Needless to say I was pissed so I went back to school in 2002 and I received my Masters Degree in Social Work. I am currently a social worker with Guilford County Department of Social Services as a Family Assessment Worker. I love my job although there are many challenging days. It's a hard and stressful job but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I¿ve thought about applying for a supervisor's position but I really like the direct contact that I have with the families and if I become a supervisor, I will lose that. So for now I plan to stay put.
