Austin's Story

WOW!!! It's the middle of September 2016 and the graduating class of 1966 will be holding their 50th Class Reunion soon. Time has passed so quickly and I am looking forward to traveling to Ohio and visiting my classmates from yesteryear. Will it be as though we just saw each other last week or will we be like total strangers? Well let me give y'all some background on what I have been up to since my last post. My health is still hanging in there. I suffered minor nerve damage in the last two fingers of my right hand and had a fusion performed on C7 of my spine. Other than that nothing of significance has hampered my health and growing older gracefully. Speaking of getting older, that's just what our grandchildren are doing. Corey (16) is a junior in high school and now has his drivers' license. His main interests are hunting, fishing and country music. His brother Gage (14) is a freshman in high school and he plays baseball nearly all year long. He is currently playing for the Northview High Freshman and Varsity teams. Amy and Mike are very proud of both of them. Austin and Saranda have two young ladies to raise. Gabrielle (14) is a high school freshman and is discovering boys. Aside from that she really likes working with little children and has expressed an interest in becoming a kindergarten teacher. Katelyn (13) attends 8th grade and plays volleyball for the Carver Junior High team. She is leaving her options for the future open at this time. Cesily and Spence also have two young ladies in their household. Abby (14) is a freshman at her high school and is a junior varsity cheerleader. At this time she would like to go into the field of psychiatry. Addison (8) is still our baby and she is in the 3rd grade. She is very shy but overcomes that feeling when she is on stage with her team or individually doing various dance routines in competition. Maybe someday we'll see her on DWTS😀. Lorrie and I took two of our families to Disney World in March of 2015 for a five day visit with the Mickey and his friends. The other family could not join us because their school system had different Spring break dates. It all worked out when Abby's cheerleading squad was selected to represent their district from Alabama to march in the Disney Magic Kingdom parade. Lorrie and I went to join them for the week and watched Abby and over 200 other cheerleaders from Alabama perform on Thanksgiving Day. Lorrie and I are still enjoying the sport of scuba diving and doing underwater photography. Since the last writing we have been to the Caribbean islands of Little Cayman and Grenada for a week and took an extended vacation to Bonaire for 4 weeks. We also enjoy land trips and have been to Niagara Falls, Cape Cod, Louisville, Nashville, Memphis (Graceland), Tupelo (Elvis' birthplace), Put in Bay, Boston, Tucson and Southern Arizona, Cleveland, and Fairport Harbor. Our kids say we should sell our home and get a motor home to travel around the country. I've seen the Robin Williams' movie RV and I don't think I would like that at all. Hope to see many of you at the 50th reunion in a few weeks! Austin Headland September 15, 2016 It's been over two years since my last update and the major change in our lives is that Lorrie and I retired in March 2014 and we are thoroughly enjoying our free time with no setting of alarm clocks. We don't play golf like we used to as a have had back surgery and rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder. I feel it won't be much longer before I'll need surgery done on the right shoulder. The first adventure we enjoyed after retiring was a two week scuba diving trip to Fiji in the South Pacific. Marine life there is very different from the Caribbean and we had the opportunity to do several organized shark feed dives. We had some great photo ops but the water was quite murky from the activity of the sharks and the chum debri that clarity was not very g...Expand for more
ood. The people on the Fiji island we visited were very friendly and pleased to have visitors. We toured two native villages and really enjoyed seeing the cheerful faces of the children who had very little in life but still were very appreciative for what they did have. They had a tin roof over their heads, a mat on the floor to sleep on, a local school for education, and family to care for them and give them love. There was no TV, no computers, no smartphones, no tablets, no electronic gaming machines, only the items that nature provided and the use of their imaginations. Since our return from Fiji we have been to Orlando for 9 days to relax around the resort pools and also visit Sea World, Disney Hollywood Studios and EPCOT. We have time sharing with the Disney Vacation Club and travel to Orlando a couple times a year. We are going to take Austin, Saranda, Gabrielle, Katelyn and Amy, Michael, Corey, Gage to Orlando during Spring break next March for 5 days. Cesily and Spence's children, Abby and Addison have their school Spring break at a different time frame so they will not be able to join us. Lorrie and I will be traveling to Ohio for the breakfast reunion on the 5th of July. Hope to see you there. Austin Headland 5/30/2014 I am married to a southern belle by the name of Lorrie. Together we have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. The young ones are 4, 8, 9, 9, 9, and 11. The girls outnumber the boys 4 to 2. My children (Amy and Austin) live in Dothan, Alabama within 15 minutes of our home. Amy has 2 boys (Gage -9 and Corey -11) and Austin has 2 girls (Gabrielle - 9 and Katelyn - 8). Lorrie has a daughter (Cesily) who lives about 2 hours north of us in a small town near Montgomery, Alabama. She has 2 girls (Abby -9 and Addison -4). They are all a handfull especially around the holidays. Lorrie and I enjoying watching the children when we are allowed to babysit. At other time we try to keep ourselves busy with work for hopefully just a few more years. We do like to get out and play a round of golf now and then but our real passion has to be the sport of scuba diving. I got my certification in 1988 and Lorrie in 1991. We have been to many places around the Caribbean and some in the Pacific to explore the waters and interact with the marine life. We both enjoy taking underwater photography as a hobby and sharing the images with our family. We have made many friends around the United States that we have enjoyed dive trips with and some people from the United Kingdom as well. We have taken a Thanksgiving trip to the island of Bonaire (near Aruba) each year for the past 15 years and have made some friends on that small island in the Caribbean. They are mostly people that once lived in the states but now reside in Bonaire. The island is mostly Dutch and is part of the Netherland Antilles. We do have a time-share interest in the Disney Vacation Club that enables us to vacation in Orlando at Disney World as well as go to other resort areas around the U.S. and overseas. We have exchanged points in the past for vacations in Phoenix, Arizona and twice in Las Vegas, Nevada. We have 3 fellow scuba divers that live in Las Vegas that we have visited with while there. I also have a cousin, Rose Gyure a graduate of Harding High around 1974 I think, who also live in Las Vegas. We visited there the first time in 1996 and saw Rose for the first time since I moved to Alabama in 1978. WOW what a renunion. Lorrie and I hope to retire at some point over the next 3 years and remain at our home in Dothan, Alabama. The grandchildren are still young enough that they enjoy spending time with us but we know that will change as they get closer to the teen years when they become so independent and they feel that the elders don't now what life is all about. Maybe then we will want to move far, far away. I have already exceeded my word quota so I am going to stop right here.
