Avery's Story

Ok, So I was already commited to joining the Army since I had turned 18 in FEB. I got to hang out for the summer and then off to Jersey for basic at Ft. Dix (all dick and gay jokes aside). It wasn't all too bad. I had been expecting to get shipped off to Saudi Arabia, right off. After 2 fun filled educational months in the Garden State, I was sent to Ft. Eustis, VA (again all female anatomy jokes aside) I learned exact what job I had signed up for. I became a Chinook (CH-47D) mechanic. It took a lot of adjusting to the Army life and living and learning about life. About 6 months later I was on my way to Korea. Camp Humphrey's (again all humping jokes aside) I enjoyed the differences our cultures had to offer (soju, kegogi, kimchi) I had met my first wife (a fellow soldier) and we moved to Savannah, GA. Savanah was a great place to be stationed. It's archetecture and old world feeling, (along with Spanish Moss draped live Oaks) reminded me of the Pirates of the Carribean ride at Disney Land. It's 1994 by now and I'm off to Korea again. Funny thing is that almost all of my friends who got stationed there with me before went back also, kinda "old home". Separation and divorce was inevitable as the Army is not marriage minded when it comes to assignments. She stayed in Savannah. I enjoyed the remainder of my time in Korea with my friends who I still keep in contact with. I was finally sent to Ft. Campbell, Ky to be part of the mighty 101...Expand for more
st. I dont have anything good to say about them. But Nashville was a fun, clean, and very safe town in the down town area. I met my curent wife while I was there, I never realized she lived catty corner to me. We met on Aug. 9th and spent everyday together since then in 1996 and still going. I got out of the Army in September of that year. We moved to Savannah in 1998 and stayed there till last year. I was working on Chinooks now as a civilian. I really like the job I do. We moved last year to Palm Coast, Florida. (i dont think there are any hidden jokes) Its a nice quiet town and home to lots of motorcycle riders. Daytona is just down the street. I had adopted William this year (finally). But I had been his father, by proxy, as I was there for his birth, and ever since. He even has my middle name. In 2006 I signed up to come over to Afghanistan and have been working here since. I do the same job I did when I was in the Army, now still for the Army and in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I get to go back home to the states but not too often as I would like. Yes we do get bombed a lot, but its not as the news want you to think. It ain't that bad. I will be going to Germany for the next year (what a good break from here) starting in August. Oktober fest here I come again!!! A few places I've also visited are Amsterdam (yes its true). Tokyo, and All over southern Germany. As of September, Soon to be back on the market.
