Barb Smith's Story

Life Since high school, the most important and pertinent things in my life include my husband of over 21 years, my two sons, Tyler and Brian, 19 and 20, respectively, and our wonderful dogs (a Mastiff, Farley; Scotty, Gil; and Bloodhound, Viloula May--she's from Alabama, so she needed a southern name). In addition, since being layed off, I have the privilege of babysitting Tyler's lab mix, his roommate's dog, also a lab mix, and the dog of Brian's girlfriend which is, also, a mutt, but looks like a chow/dingo mix. My dog food bill is higher than our grocery bill! I'm afraid when I get old and gray, I'll be called the "dog lady!" After having been at my last job at The Wright Group, an educational publishing company, for 7 years, the company was purchased by McGraw-Hill and all operations were moved to their existing offices in other parts of the US. Needless to say, we were all layed off. I decided to take this time to stay home for awhile, lounge around and eat bon bons and watch soaps--yea right! Actually, I did decide to take some time to get some much-needed things done at home. Currently, we're finishing the last of our remodeling (I hope), which started in 1996--FINALLY! For those of you out there who have done any remodeling or additions to your homes, I think you know what I mean--it never ends! Let's see . . . my husband has worked at Boeing for approximately 16 years, and I've gone from having my own business from home (when my kids were babies) to any number of office jobs. For some reason, these companies all either were sold or went out of business . . . hmmmmm, I wonder if I should worry about t...Expand for more
hat. :) The most rewarding job I ever had was with Northwest Hospital in the childbirth center. Although it wasn't glamourous, I got to experience the birth of new babies each day. Fortunately, very few nights had sad outcomes. Even though I can watch any type of surgery on TV, I found that my responses in the OR caused me to buckle at the knees--darn. I would have loved to have taken the offer to become an OR tech, but it's not usually a good thing when the tech faints while handing a clamp to the surgeon! Bud and I are soccer fanatics and dream of going to the World Cup in Germany. We both coached our kids when they were young, and I played indoor in Snohomish for awhile as a keeper. What a blast! Shannon Cole played, too! She was great! Also, Sally MacFadden played with us a few times. Some of you might remember that she played soccer for the Hysters in high school, and I know they went to State at least once. Of course, she was awesome. The things I love to do, now, are gardening, watching (not playing, anymore) soccer, going on RV trips with our pups, playing with and walking our dogs, cooking (not baking), swimming, and reading gossip magazines--pretty exciting, huh! Oh, and I used to work out all the time, so I figure I've done enough to cover me for the next ten years or more. At least, that's how I justify not working out right now. :) Okay, I know I've bounced around, but writing a bio for the last 100, I mean 27 years is pretty tough! I hope whoever reads this is doing great! Feel free to e-mail me. If I can make it to the computer without tripping over a dog, I check my mail each day.
