Barbara's Story
Life
After high school, I moved to South Pasadena, where I met my future husband. We were married in 1964 and moved to Las vegas NV in 1967. Have now been here more than 40 years, very involved in our community, this is home. We have 2 grown kids, one grandson, 12. Our daughter works for a Destination Management company here in Las Vegas, in the business division as Vice President and our son is a Union Stagehand.
Workplace
I have worked for the District Attorneys office for almost 23 years, the first 16 as a Victim Advocate, while I finished my degree in Criminal Justice Administration, the last 7 as the Program Administrator of the Victim Witness Assistance Unit. I love this job as well, I supervise 12 people, mostly Victim Advocates and I get to go out in the community and tell people what we do and how and why we do it. As a Victim Advocate, I loved what I did, no two days were ever the same and I got to go to court, handle restitution and assist victims in many ways. Now as the supervisor, I love the job in a whole new way. I still get to go home every day feeling like I really helped someon...Expand for more
e, a job satisfaction that many jobs don't have. This office does a real service to our community by helping the victims and witnesses of criminal cases prosecuted by the Clark County District Attorney's Office.
I spent 4 years as the Union president for the Clark County Employees Union, SEIU 1107, and during that time I won a 12 week scholarship to the Harvard Trade Union Program. For someone who spent the first 20 years as a stay at home mom, this was so different, but rewarding. My Husband is retired, so he cleans and cooks (sort of) I have a few years to go yet till I retire. I will be thrilled to continue in this job until I retire....Target Date December 2012.
I retired in September of 2013 from my paying job, but still stay involved. I am on the Steering Committee for the Nevada Victim Assistance Academy, we will have our second academy in August of 2015. I am also very involved in Democratic politics, I am the 1st Vice President of the Women's Democratic Club of Clark County and will be the President next year, the presidential year. Try to stay active walking and swimming. Love retirement!
