Barbara's Story
Life
After I graduated from Grossmont HS in 1966, I went to Occidental College in Los Angeles, and graduated with a B.A. in History. I went on to grad school at University of Wisconsin, Madison, and completed a Master's Degree in History and Japanese Language. Then I went to Japan and taught at a University in Kyoto.
Following Japan, I went to seminary and became a United Methodist minister. I have been pastor of churches in Idaho and Oregon, been a prison chaplain, done campus ministry, and taught seminary in Liberia, West Africa, I married in 1976, had two children, and divorced in 2001. My children are now 25, Daniel, and 20, Hannah.
My son is a graduate of Rice University, in Houston, Texas, and my daughter is halfway through college at Bryn Mawr College, just outside of Philadelphia. She...Expand for more
is about to leave for study abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I currently live in Portland Oregon, where I am pastor of a Japanese American church and live in an intentional progressive Christian community, Peace House. I love Oregon, and the work that I do which allows me to use so many parts of my life and joy from the last almost forty years since we finished High School! I also am still active in music: I compose, as well as sing, and play piano, guitar, and 'cello. One of my fondest memories from High School is directing the Red Robe Choir,
and the great experience of singing in that wonderful choir, and doing the Christmas pageant every year. I don't know if there are any Grossmont grads this far north, but it would be great fun to connect with alums up here in Oregon. Peace, Barbara
