Jennifer's Story
I was born in Portland and attended Hosford Grade School before attending Cleveland. After high school I worked for a short time before getting married in 1968,
My husband was in the Army so we moved around. We lived in Colorado Springs, West Berlin, Germany and Lawton, Oklahoma. I have 2 children (now aged 48 and 45) and 7 grandchildren (ages 30 to 17 years). My husband and I separated in 1974 divorcing in 1979. I have not remarried.
I went back to school (PCC) in 1975 and graduated in 1977 with an Associates Degree in Accounting. From 1983 to 2002 I worked at Meier & Frank both in their Traffic department and Purchasing department. In 2002 all the corporate jobs were moved to southern California and 600 of us lost our jobs My one grandson lived with me for 18 months and I was his sole care giver. He was 9 years old when he came to live with me and almost 11 when he left. After that I did odd jobs (house sitting, etc) to make ends meet.
In July 2008, after 6 years of unemployment, I started working part time at Independent Living Resources.. In 2011 I started working full time as the office manager. I Retired fro...Expand for more
m there in February 2015.
In May of 2012 I was involved in a car accident that left me with a broken left hip. I spent 2 weeks at Emanuel Hospital and then 5 weeks at a rehab center learning to walk again. I was released to go home where I had in-home physical therapy for 3 weeks. I was able to return to work exactly 10 weeks after my accident. Unfortunately, even today, I need to use a cane or walker to get around. My oldest granddaughter came to live with me and be my caregiver. She is still with me, I am just glad the accident was not my fault..
Since retirement I have keep busy with groups in my apartment building. In 2015 we spent a week at the beach, and traveled to both southern California and Boulder City, Nevada. In 2016 we returned to southern California and in July 2016 we went to Orlando, Florida for a convention. I had never been to Florida before and I doubt I will ever go back. We hated the weather. It was hot and humid during the day and at night it rained along with thunder and lightening. This happened the whole week we were there. Thank God for air conditioning. Give me Portland weather anytime.
