Barbara's Story
Life
Wow! How does one go back 46 years and remember all that's happened, esp. at my age??!!After graduating from PHS in '60, I attended PCC, graduating in '62. A year out working at Bank of America in Pasadena, and then off to Bob Jones University in South Carolina. Graduated in '65 with BS in Elementary Education.Taught for 3 years at Central Baptist School in Anaheim, CA, then 1 year at Oaklawn Christian in Redding CA (LOVED northern CA! Lake Shasta and Whiskeytown Lake esp). During that time I met my husband-to-be while working during the summer at my parent's children's camp at Big Bear Lake, CA. He was from IL, tall (6'3'') and handsome, a Juvenile Corrections Officer with the State of Illinois Department of Corrections and also a licensed, ordained Baptist minister. He's lived in IL most of his life; loves hunting and fishing and the outdoors. After marriage in '69, we lived in Grafton, IL for 8 years. During that time, I taught at West Elementary School in Jerseyville, and at Grafton Christian Academy in Grafton. Also took time out to have two daughters, Jana Lynn in '70 and Lori Beth in '72. Then back to CA for 4 years. Lived 1 year in Los Angeles (ugh!) during which time we added Krista Joy('77) to the family. We moved and built a home in Los Osos, CA (central coast region). I taught for three years at Central Coast Christian Academy in Arroyo Grande. My husband (forgot to tell you his name: James Ronald Cowan - but goes by Ron) decided he missed the woods of IL, so we moved back here in 1981. We lived for 4 years in the little village of Brighton, pop. 2,000. It was fantastic! You knew everyone, never locked your doors, kids could play 'till dark, etc. Only problem was, I went back to teaching, at Mississippi Valley Christian School in Alton. With Ron working in Grafton, the girls and I going back and forth to Alton (by this time the two oldest were involved in volleyball, cheer leading, etc.), we were on the road 24/7. So ...Expand for more
we moved to Alton - and we're still here! Ron and I are both retired now. He retired in 2000 after 32 years as a juvenile corrections officer, and in 1998 I just plain old "tired" and quit teaching full time. I still sub some and tutor. Jana and her son, Brett James (B.J.) live nearby in Godfrey. She is a medical transcriptionist at Alton Memorial Hospital and B.J. (my pride and joy!) is 9 and in the fourth grade. Jana runs marathons (Hawaii, San Diego and most recently the Chicago Marathon); Lori and her husband Chris (Dafoe) live in Port Orchard,WA, where he is the computer guru for the state school offices and she is the coding and compliance officer for a group of 70 doctors in Bremerton. She also teaches coding and medical ethics at Bryman Medical Institute. Krista lives in Belleville, IL (about 45 min. away) and is the assistant for a busy orthodontist. She also does free lance make up work for Clarins and Mac Cosmetics Alton is just across the river from St. Louis, and Krista sometimes does the make-up for the St. Louis Rams cheer leaders. Both Ron I have had our share of health problems - Ron had quadruple heart by-pass surgery. I have had 2 back surgeries, both knees replaced (teaching school and raising kids is hard on the body!) I recently had gastric by-pass surgery and have lost 120 lbs.! For "old codgers" we're doing great! God has been so good to us. Would love to hear from anyone from my past. After leaving CA for college I lost contact with everyone from Pasadena. Ditto for my friends from college with the exception of a few that I have met along the way teaching in the same Christian Schools. My parents moved from Pasadena in 1966. My dad passed away in 1997 from leukemia;my mother lives in Fresno with my youngest sister and her family. Will try to answer any and all e-mails.I would love to hear from any old (or should I say "former" ?) school mates or any former students from any of the schools where I have taught.
