Barbara's Story

Life Married 47 years on Oct. 9, 1971, two grown children, a daughter and a son. Let's back up a little. After getting married in 1971, my husband got stationed in Killeen, Texas (Army). After about 3 months there, he got transferred to Germany where I joined him 3 months later. Living in Germany was a wonderful experience. We had the opportunity to travel around Germany and we saw many wonderful castles. We visited Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and London, England to name a few. We returned to state-side in December of 1973 to be stationed in Texas again. After six months there, we were transferred to Indianapolis, Indiana. This is where we had our first child in 1975. I earned my Cosmetology License in April of 1976 and ended up having my own mini-business at home so that I could stay home and care for my daughter. In 1977, my husband was sent to Officer's Candidate School (OCS) in Georgia. We lived there about 4 months and then we got stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. We lived there from August of 1977 to December of 1980 and I was about to have my second child. My husband had to go back to Indiana for advancement training. This is when I had my second child in January of 1981 in Indianapolis, Indiana. So both of my children were born in Indiana, only 5 years apart at different moves. We had quite the adventure. After nine months there, we were transferred to Alexandria, Virginia and lived in Montclair. We lived there 4 years and got stationed in Hawaii. That was like having a four year vacation. he school where my kids attended. The school drafted me into working with the students and from there I ended up substituting for the district. It was time for another transfer and we went back to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona in July of 1989 where my husband retired from the Army in 1991. I went to college for my degree and graduated from the University of Arizona in 1995. I have taught Kindergarten, Fourth/Fifth Special education in Arizona, and then we moved to Southwestern Virginia in 1998, a very small town called Wytheville. I worked in Bland, Virginia, teaching 2nd grade and then transferred to another school that was closer to home and taught 4th grade. We got tired of the weather back east (after 4 years) so we moved back out west and ended up in Las Vegas, Nevada. I taught third grade on Nellis Air Force Base and finished my Master's Degree in Education, April of 2006. I guess you never get too old to learn. I have had so much fun teaching. I have also enjoyed traveling and visiting many places throughout the United States. It has been quite the experience. We became grandparents on August 21, 2009. Cystal & Jim moved to Secaucus, NJ because he got an amazing job as a producer for the MLB Network. Our son got married on July 18,09. Our summer was very busy. We retired in 2012 from Las Vegas and bought an RV and hit the road. Traveled until 2014 and bought a home in Northern Nevada in January. The weather was too cold for us so after 3 years we sold and moved back to Sierra Vista, AZ. This is our home now. We still like to travel and do so as long as possible.
