Barbara's Story

Life Hello past friends! I have lived in Gresham for the past 23 years or so (in the same house for 21 years, pretty rare these days). Wow, time flies when you are having fun. I have three children, a son, Julian, who is 20 and attending college at University of Oregon, a daughter, Madeline 18 (who has beautiful red hair) and is hoping to go to Oregon State, and another son, Gabriel, who is 13. I started my family later than most but I think it keeps me young. My kids are heavy into sports and that means I am too. My husband is from Portland originally. I met him through Dave Calhoun--they were roommates for a few years! Our life revolves around our children's activities. My mother still lives in Estacada but is fighting cancer now. It is hard since she was so strong for so many years. I travel to Estacada frequently because of that. I enjoy gardening like my mother does and appreciate that being passed on to me. I thoroughly enjoyed our 30th (GULP!) reunion and wished we had a couple more hours to chat. The class of 1974 is a great group of people. It was nice to connect with everyone again. I look forward to the 35th reunion--hopefully I can attend. I had a health scare in spring of 2007 with an early stage breast cancer. I was lucky to have found it through a routine mammogram. I had surgery and radiation treatment for six weeks. I was lucky to have found it early as this avoided chemotherapy. It does make you reassess your life and priorities. I look forward to living a long life. Contact me anytime if you want to cha...Expand for more
t. Barb College I started my college career at Oregon State and spent two terms there. I then transferred to Southern Oregon State College. I received a degree in Business Education. I got a job right out of college (pretty rare these days) and began teaching at Sandy High School. I finished my master's degree at Portland State University (one of the best decisions of my life) which allowed me to take advantage of the opportunity to teach at Portland Community College. Teaching works well for my short attention span. I could never sit for eight hours a day and I like the control I have over what happens in my classroom. Teaching high school was at times grueling and a challenge, but I have many happy memories too. I see my former students everywhere, some have kids in my own children's classes and quite often they tell me I look the same. Well I don't think I look the same (the pounds have added up in my forties) but I sure appreciate the compliment! Workplace After I finished college at Southern Oregon State College, I began my teaching career at Sandy High School. I spent 10 years at Sandy. I left when I was expecting my second child to be home for my children when they were little. A year after my daughter was born, I saw an ad at Portland Community College for a part-time instructor and I have worked here since that time. I enjoy teaching adults but sometimes miss the craziness of high schoolers. I am sure I will retire as a teacher but not for awhile since I have a thirteen year old to send to college in the future.
