Barbara's Story
Life
Marrying young, I had 2 girls and divorced after 4 years and worked for a year in Surgery at St Francis Hospital, then left at 21 for California where I married Larry Smith, formerly of Central HS in Tulsa. Our combined families totaled 2 girls and 3 boys. Divorced again after 7 years, I entered the work force and slaved away at waitressing for 2 tough years; then, with a tip from a friend, got an entry level job at the Office of the Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools. With the encouragement of people there, I started back to school.
After 15 years of being single I married Bob McCaughin, an administrator at the office. I quit work when he retired and we moved to an idyllic Victorian seaport on the Washington Peninsula. When he passed away, I decided to remain here, as I have many friends and am involved in a lot of town doings. Plus, I love the mountains and water; and an hours' drive plus a delightful ferry ride will put me in the heart of Seattle.
When I visit Southern California these days to see friends and family, the hordes of people and the traffic are unnerving after my familiar 2-lane treelined highways here.
School

arlene Moore, and I was a member of the old Shadrac Social Club. I wonder if it still exists. I remember those crisp fall mornings when we all would congregate in the schoolyard, waiting for the doors to be unlocked at school would begin.
Will Rogers HS; what a beautiful old building it was. I can still remember the words of the school song. Social Clubs were still a big thing, and I was a member of NSK and so proud that one of our members, Joyce Worthington (I think that was her name) was a runnerup for Miss America. My biology teacher was my favorite. He was a WWII Vet, a tail gunner, and as a class we knew if we could get him started on War stories, our lessons could be stalled for awhile.
College
Starting back to school in California in 1968, I attended Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa at night, eventually obtaining my AA Degree. Thanks to the State educational system which had low fees so that all students could acquire an education, I was also able to attend California State University, Dominguez Hills, graduating in 1981 with a Masters Degree in Administration. For many years my life seemed to be work, school, sleep - repeat over and over. But it was worth it for self esteem, promotions and higher salary.
