Barbara's Story
Hope to be remembered: As a naturally happy person who loved to dance.
Craziest thing done in school: Got in trouble for going to school after my Dad told me to stay home. Long and pretty unbelievable story underlies this, but I can honestly say that I'm the only one I've ever known whose father showed up at the high school (Rogers) in full uniform, and actually marched me out of the school, through the halls, in front of God and Everybody, and put me on indefinite restriction for GOING TO SCHOOL, against "direct orders."
Lived in several places and moved more often than I would have liked. My father served in the Marine Corps for 30 years: WWII, Korea, & Vietnam. He retired when I was a freshman in college, sent me packing off to the the dorm, and moved from Virginia to Louisiana without telling me, until after the fact.
Letter: "Dear Barbara, we have moved...."
What in life has surprised you: Are you kidding? Everything is life is a string of surprises!
Teacher I'd like to see again: Dr. Ben Wright - my faculty advisor and oboe teacher in college. Unfortunately, he died suddenly at the ripe old age of 46, in his office ...Expand for more
at JMU.
I am happier now than I have ever been in my adult life, right here in Urbanna, VA with my husband Cloyde, our house on the water, our sailboat, and our silly cats.
Which first crush? When do they start counting as real?
Weirdest job - I've had a few of those. How about dispatcher/matron of women prisoners at the county jail?
Should have done differently: I'd have had more fun in college instead of hammering away at 22 credit hours/semester (while working part-time on campus) Should not have taken myself so seriously.
What would surprise your classmates about you: They were pretty surprised when I went skinny dipping in the officer's pool at our high school reunion at Quantico.
Scary: Getting my foot stuck in something under the snow in our back yard near Buffalo, NY (at age 4), and my older brother (who was about 8 or 9) running out to "save" me with a saw in his hand.
Personal Motto: "You're either green & growing or ripe & rotting."
Don't whine about what you'd "always wished you could do/be"... You're not dead, yet! Either go DO it NOW or else update your goals! You ARE enabled! (don't wait for permission).
