Barbara's Story
Hi Everyone! I came back to New York in 2001 to volunteer at historic St. Paul's Chapel in Lower Manhattan, a respite center for 9/11 Responders during the 9 month Rescue and Recovery Effort following the September 11th attacks -and I am still here! It was a blessing being at St. Paul's, the oldest public building in Manhattan -since 1766, and where George Washing went to pray after he was sworn in as our 1st president, and where he worshipped for the 5 years New York was the capital. As one of 14,000 volunteers at the Chapel during its World Trade Center Relief Ministry, I helped with supplies, wakeup calls, meals and the yummy desserts table. I'd been gone from New York for 25 years: 7 years as a student at the San Francisco Zen Center; then back east for 2 years as office staff at the Insight Meditation Buddhist Center in Massachusetts; then God sent me to Vermont -yes, Vermont is heaven on earth; and last stop before returning east: Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I earned 2 masters degree, one of them from Marquette University -where I was when 9/11 happened. From 2005 until 2016 I lived with my amazing Mom in Long Beach Number 1 -so...Expand for more
rry California, we were here first, only a 1 hour train ride from the City. After Mom's death in 2017, I stayed on in Long Beach, and have continued my involvement as an advocate for the 9/11 Community. This includes being a 2016 cofounder of the annual Calling Of The Names Ceremony, held the afternoon of September 11th, at St. Paul's Chapel, The ceremony pays tribute to deceased 9/11 Responders who were part of the 9-month Rescue and Recovery Effort and honors their families whose love made their efforts at the WTC site possible. I am single, and have hopes to meet my sweetheart when I finally get to Ireland (next year?) and find my people! We have Protestant and Catholic Irish ancestors. I feel a strong connection to Northern Ireland -we'll see if my people and my fella are there. I have helped organize a few SHM Academy high school reunions; I would love to go to one for elementary school, hello Our Holy Redeemer, Freeport, New York. I have a four-legged friend Rescue Riley (in photo). He is from Brooklyn, where Mom and I were also born, and he keeps me on my toes! That's all for now folks! Glad to be on board classmates.com!
