Barbara's Story
It is now January of 2008 and I recall wondering when in High School, with all the wonderful kids of the Class of '55...(GO VHS!...)about whatever is ahead. To look down the dark tunnel of the Future seemed impossible, and indeed it was, and now, here I sit, looking at the other end of the tunnel, filled with light, telling me my story.
I don't know how many knew that my mother died when I was ten and I moved from Portland OR into my Father's home in Vancouver and suddenly moved from being an only child to being the big sister to quite a large family.
I happily went off to the U of W, where I met my wonderful husband of 51 years (THAT LONG? How did it happen? Where did time go?). We raised two wonderful children, a son and a daughter who are very successful in their own right and they blessed us with four grandchildren. However they did not meet the conditions of the contract I signed with them at their birth: they were never to move very far away, but they...Expand for more
did. So, go sue, right?
My training in leadership, thanks to the fellowship of my classmates, and some damn good teachers, gave me the courage to be involved in politics, education, consulting, motivational speaking and writing and within the first group of women to become the Sandwich Generation, fighting for women's rights to clear the glass ceiling, equal pay for equal work and new opportunities in the world of work, as well as raising my children and tending to aging parents.
Now retired from all public work, I enjoy our beautiful beaches on the shores of Puget Sound and for once, get a chance to be a child and just play, without too many responsibilities.
I am writing two novels and hope to soon have a publisher, as well as enjoying friends and family and my little Maltese doggie.
Best wishes and regards to any classmates dropping by. Especially to my old CampFire Group of girls led by Mrs. Borsma. You are still most precious to me in my heart.
