Barbara's Story

Barbara is from Jackson, Mississippi. Her schools include Sam M. Brinkley High for one year and she graduated Hirsch High School in 1965. She later attended Roosevelt University. Urban Gateways where she served from 1983 to to 1993 and again from 1995 to 1997. In 1997, Kraft Foods created the Kraft Art Discovery initiative where Barbara was the full-time Program Consultant. For nine years, the initiative provided collaborative opportunities for Chicago's leading art institutions, organizations and museums to partner in presenting art programs in the Chicago Public Schools. Barbara is one of the 50 Honorees for Urban Gateways’ 50th Anniversary Gala, April 1, 2011. She also received the prestigious Chicago Defender 50 Women of Excellence Award, 2009, and the “Jack J. Culberg Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award” at Jobs for Youth, 2000. Currently, Barbara serves on the Chicago Sinfonietta Ball Committee, since 2007; the DuSable Museum of African American History Night of 100 Stars Committee, since 2011; and the Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity Gala Committee since 1993. Barbara did her undergraduate work at Roosevelt University in English, 1967 - 1970, and her graduate work at Northeastern Illinois University in Inner City Studies, 1971 - 1972.".
