Barbara's Story

Thank you Bill and Ken for asking for my story, My life revolved around my husband and four children. I was a happy housewife and mother. My husband was the bread winner and worked his way to upper management. During our engagement I said I'd like to have four children and he said, fine as long as you are a stay at home mom. I did that gladly and have no regrets. In my mid thirties I was asked to do some volunteer work at a local museum. I became Program Chairman and a Tour Guide at the Will County Historical Society. I also joined the Bolingbrook Historical Society. Soon after a lady called and said someone had recomended me and thought I might help her and her neighbor form a Historical Society in Romeoville . I liked the idea and it sounded like fun so we did it. My husband helped and the company he worked for let us use their attorneys to approve the charter. We lived in Honeytree and we had a great group of friends. My friends and I got together almost daily for coffee and often filled a couple of cars and went to breakfast or lunch together. Afterwards we went shopping. We often had parties during the day . Our husbands got along well and golfed together. Holidays, husbands and wives gathered in one home or another and we all partied together. We all loved our beautiful neighborhood and homes and vowed we'd never move. Once we women spent several days getting together and making dozens of home made pies . Another time we had the worst winter ever, It was 40 below or something like that with the wind chill factor. The streets were covered in ice. I had a party scheduled, even with a fire in both fireplaces and the furnace going it was cold . Not a car was on the street,It was too dangerous. I looked out the side windows of the entrance hall and saw my friends coming down the icy street from both directions. We were always there for one another. Every Christmas we had a cookie exchange .We just enjoyed life. Once a friend had the plumber coming so we all sat in her family room drinking champagne and laughing while the plumbers fixed the problem in her powder room. What fun we always had. Although I had a rich full life I'd always had a desire to own some income property. My husband was busy with his career so I asked him if he'd mind if I started buying property. ly homes and rented them out. He agreed even though , it meant an extra workload on him. He let me pick out the properties and handle the finances and he helped me decorate and fix them up. We prospered and I knew of some people who wanted to open a bank. I asked my husband if he was interested. He said yes and we got involved and became founders and stockholders of the Southwest Suburban bank in Bolingbrook. My husband served on the advisory board. A few years after opening we were offered 2/12 times book value for our stock, we sold and the bank merged with another. Meanwhile my husbands doctor said He'd be a dead if he continued working. With four children stil in school my husband told me he'd quit his job only after the kids were out of school. That's the kind of man he was. In spite of severe injuries he took his responsibilities seriously. So in his early 40's and my late 30's we retired. We'd remodeled our first house in the city and built two new houses in the suburbs so I suggested we build one while he was still working. He told me to pick out any houseplans I wanted and he'd build it for me. We flew back and bought the property . A few hours later he found a contractor . We had done a lot of boating before his accident and found three acres about a mile from the lake in another state in a warmer climate. I had loved traveling to Europe and visiting my favorite places but now we traveled to see our new home . Two or three years after building it we moved in. Most of my friends have taken the long trip to visit and we stay in touch. If someone is sick we hear about it and encourage one another. After getting set up we made newfriends and joined a camping club. We took to the roads in our RV. I have some wonderful friends here and we stay busy. We had several life changing tragedies but we loved each other and pulled together. We decided not to let them pull us down and decided to be just as happy as we could be. I did everything I ever wanted and more. I 'm quite contented with how my life turned out. I have a wonderful family and so grateful. God is good and the tragedies and losses make us better people so why complain. We were so blessed in spite of the odds against us. I hope you've all been as blessed as I've been. Barbara
