Barbara's Story

Life After spending twenty years doing my stint in the US Navy, I have retired and gone back to work in the civilian community. My family: All of my children are great kids, unique in their own ways. My oldest son, Kiley attends college (business/math)part time and works as a store manager. My daughter Darcia died in 2003 in an automobile accident but became a new mother in 2002 and I have a beautiful granddaughter, Alize' that i am raising and my youngest son, Danen, graduated from high school last year (2005). He is an amazing athelete, especially in track events and soccer. He also enjoys playing ice hockey. He is still deciding on a career path. My Job Definately different from military life. After attending college, getting my degree in Social Work, working at a nursing home and a head start program, I am now going to try my hand at photography. It has always been my lifelong dream and I can finally do what I will enjoy most. Life is way to short to have regrets. School When thinking back over the school years....so long ago....I remember attending several schools because my mother would get spring fever and have to move to a new place. I got to attend four different high schools in as many years...the best part was meeting so many people along the way. Military I have spent half of my life in the military. It is definately a unique way of life. I started out in Orlando (boot camp) and I certainly could ...Expand for more
have sworn that it was the hottest year on record. But then again going from Maine in May to Florida can be quite a jolt. I went from Orlando to NTTC Corry Station in Pensacola for school. I was transferred from there to Naval Submarine Support Facility (tugboat crew) in New London CT for about 1 and 1/2 yrs. My son Kiley was born in CT. From there we went to San Diego, CA for Radioman A school and stayed in San Diego at the 11th Naval District Hdqtrs at the foot of Broadway for a few months at which time I re-enlisted and we were off to our first trip overseas. Kiley and I spent the next 3 years in Nea Makri, Greece where I worked as a radioman. From Greece we transferred to Pensacola Florida and attended CTT A school. My daughter Darcia was born in Pensacola. From there we transferred to Winter Harbor Maine where we spent the next four years. We left Winter Harbor in 1984 and hopped a jet to Guam for two years. Several typhoons later we transferred to FT Meade in Maryland where my youngest son Danen was born (Bethesda). We spent three years there and repeated the duty assignments in reverse...back to Guam and then back to Winter Harbor where I retired after 20 years in 1994. That day was a great day as well as a sad day because I knew that I would eventually lose touch with all my old shipmates and some friends. Readjustment to civilian life had it's stressful times as well as great times. Would I do it all again...you bet!!!!!
