Barbara's Story
Life
Having married a military man right out of high school, I left MI and lived in Texas, Missouri, and Athens, Greece before returning to MI in '76 as a single mom, with a young son. Worked for the construction company that built the Renaissance Center for several years, and when that job was completed, I worked for another commercial builder for a few years before heading for Texas in the late 70's. Stayed in Dallas until 1984 when I was offered a promotion and relocation to Philly, then Houston, then Cincinnati, and finally back to a very different Dallas seven years later. Cincinnati was my favorite city - and only a 5 hour drive to family in Roseville. I remarried, and have two terrific daughters. I'm divorced now, with three great kids, a wonderful daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter, and step-grandson. My two daughters are in high school, and both have a gift for music and drama.
I'm president of a non-profit organization, very active in my church, and always on the go! Life is very good, and I feel very blessed. I had the opportunity to walk through the Sacred Heart grade school just before it was torn down (and purchase one of the school room doors!). The stairs still creaked in the same spots, and I swear I could still smell the crayons and floor wax. The newel post that held "The Bell" was ...Expand for more
still there (remember it was such a priviledge to be chosen to ring it?), and who could forget the creepy basement bathrooms? Talk about a trip down memory lane! I hated to see the old building in such disrepair, and sad to see the empty space on my last visit home.
Workplace
Been with Siplast (Comm'l Roofing Manufacturer) for 5 years and love my job as HR Manager. No two days are ever alike and the people I work with are the best! Classy organization, with a family feel, but without the politics! Prior to that I was the HR Manager with an outsourcing firm for about 4.5 yrs - learned a lot, but they were very hard lessons. I did get to spend a considerable amount of time in Chicago, San Francisco, and NY while with them, so at least I enjoyed some other parts of the country, but that was about the only positive memories from my stint with them. And before that I was with Bell Atlantic Business Systems Services for 12 years where I held many different positions, and moved from Dallas, to Philadelphia, to Houston, to Cincinnati, and then returned to Dallas - all over the span of about 7 years. Did a LOT of traveling for that company. After many years of living out of suitcases, I'm quite content to be at home and grateful that my work requires only minimal travel - and most of that is just same day!
