CLASS OF 1970
Greenhills, OH

Barry's Story

Where to begin? I moved to Washington DC in 1975 with a good friend from college. I fell in love with the international atmosphere, sidewalk cafes and the night life. There is always something going on here. I met and married a Virginia girl in 1977. We have 3 children, two girls and a boy. My daughters are married (no grand children) and my son is finally out of school. We divorced about ten years ago and I've remarried 5 years ago. The second time I've been extremely fortunate to find my soul mate. Professionally, I worked with AT&T for 7 years and then took a job in New York running sales for a mid--size company for a couple of years. After making other people a lot of money I decided to start my own business back in DC. It is easier on paper than in real life. I was able to make a decent living but not a killing and I merged, or sold my early attempts at building a technology based company. In 1994, I merged with another company that planned to go public. c offering in 1996. It looked like it was time to shop for an island in the Caribbean. Things were taking off. We acquired 4 more companies and we increased sales over 20 times within 2 years. I ran the Canadian subsidiary (the vision systems company) and was fortunate to travel extensively through Asia and some of Europe. The stock was climbing and they wanted more. When the Chairman asked me to cook the books it was time to leave. Their puffed up results led to a collapse of the stock less than a year later. Of course it was before I could sell my restricted stock and options. So much for the island. I've since changed industries and I have been engaged in commercial mortgage finance. I am looking to start up a real estate development company (even in this down market) there are several niche markets that are not being served fully. I personally believe that this is the right time to get in since everyone else is trying to get out. The contrarian view. There will be some real bargains in the next couple of years. I hope all is well with you and thanks for your interest. Drop me a note. I'd love to hear what you been doing all these years. Barry
