Barry's Story

Life Wow, I just read my old life story and realized that I've lived another lifetime since I wrote that stuff in 2007. I know that I promised I'd see you all at the 2007 reunion but a funny thing happened on my way to the forum....I had a heart attack while on a 20 mile bike ride. It happened one week before Paul Kaller and I would have begun our car trip up to New Bedford. Anne (my fantastic life partner here in Vero Beach, FL) and I were at about mile 13 on our 20 mile bike ride when my attack began. Knowing that I was superman-junior and it was unthinkable that I could possibly be in less than perfect health, I refused to seek medical attention. It made much more sense to go home and lay on the floor of our house for hours writhing in pain while I insisted I was "in perfect health!" I never had even one little pain in my heart throughout the whole episode. I did have severe pain down my left arm and was sweating a lot. Anne had the good sense to ignore my machismo and call 911. The silly EMT's refused to believe me too as they administered life saving care in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. No one listened to me as I insisted that I was healthy as a horse!...fortunately. So, I want to apologize for depriving you of what would have been your most memorable reunion ever.....for had I not gone on that bikeride, the last one I had planned before leaving for New Bedford, I most assuredly would have had my heart attack while drinking and dancing like a madman at the reunion. I'm sure of that because my RCA (right coronary artery) was 100% blocked and one lesser artery was 75% blocked. It was a time bomb waiting to go off the first time I pushed myself to the limit. But think about it. Who usually gets to go surrounded by 100 friends? Not many. What a sendoff that would have been. I am happy to report that I am back to normal after successful surgery in which they put in a medical stent. Now I'm on a campaign to educate all of my friends about the hidden dangers of the silent killer....cholesterol filled arteries. T...Expand for more
he months and days before my attack, my blood pressure was around 110/60 and my pulse rate was about 55, figures better than most guys have at age 20. Those figures encouraged me to ignore years of elevated cholesterol and elevated triglycerides. Big mistake! Don't you make the same one. Okay? I'm no longer the president of my Condo Association, having resigned in February 2009 after 4 years of intense work overseeing our $18 million reconstruction project from hurricane damages in 2004. I haven't lived in my condo for three years so it's been a pain commuting back and forth every day. I'm now pretty much lost as to what to do with all of my time now that I'm not volunteering 60 hours each week. Having taken off only the three weeks after my heart attack in four years, I estimate that I gave about 9000 hours to the project of rebuilding the complex. If you want to pick up tons of enemies and tons of good friends, volunteer to head your association. But don't ever have your head examined or they'll put you away for good. Anne and I will be driving up the east coast from Vero Beach to New Bedford the last week of October, stopping to visit friends and relatives along the way. Our main purpose is to root for her 33 year old daughter as she winds her way through the streets of New York City running in the marathon on November 1st. We'll be in NB for two days and then head back south. If it's not too inconvenient, maybe about 100 of us could get together to make up for the reunion I missed. Think about it. I'd like to see some of you while I still have some hair on my head. In my usual modest way, I told Anne that I played center on the basketball team and was also the starting quarterback on the football team, so if you get to meet her, please don't give me away...Thanks. Oh....almost forgot to mention the most important thing of all. My 2000 sq. foot condo is for sale or rent. 3 br, 3 full baths, lake view, gigantic heated pool, tennis, racquettball, healthclub, BINGO on Fridays....Don't ya love it? C'mon down!
