Bart's Story

When I graduated from West, I went to the U of Minnesota. Two years later, I got the opportunity to go to Brook¿s Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California; so I took my AA from the U of M, got on a plane (it was -22 degrees when I boarded) and moved to California. When I arrived, it was 85 degrees and I thought I would die! All I could do for the first month was sleep and sweat. After Brooks, I joined the Air Force as a photographer. I was stationed in Klamath Falls, Oregon and watched while, one by one, everyone in our photo lab was sent to Viet Nam. I was lucky. I think my file card was lost behind a cabinet because I never got the call. I spent my whole hitch in Klamath Falls. It was a terrible place to be. Every weekend I had to make horrible choices. Do I go fishing or hunting? Do I go camping at Crater Lake, Mt. Shasta, the Lava Beds National Monument, or Mt. Lassen, etc.? After the Air Force, I moved to Beverly Hills and started a commercial photography business. I soon discovered th...Expand for more
at I was a better photographer then a businessman, so I changed fields. When I was in the Air Force, I got interested in ham radio and electronics. Computers were just coming into vogue, so I went back to school and became a computer technician. After ten years as an engineering technician, I moved into management. I have been a quality assurance manager ever since. During that time, I used my GI Bill and earned my BA from California State University, Fullerton at night. I married my wife Carren in 1972. We have two grown children. Our oldest, Ira, got his BS in Accounting from the University of Southern California and is a manager for PriceWaterhouseCooper in Irvine, California. Our daughter Rachel got her BA in Psychology from Cornell University and her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Delaware. She is currently a psychology professor at Delaware State University in Dover, DE. I am currently planning my retirement in about 125 days, 4 hours and (you get the idea) and am looking to a bright future.
