Basil's Story

Life This is the vita that I use for business purposes. It pretty much summarizes the basics, though skimping the personal/family side of things. For those who don't know, I married Eunice Straight in December, 1960, and we spent 3.5 years in Munich, Germany, in the early 1960s, pre-Vietnam, when Americans were still heroes there. Eun has been a nursery school manager and teacher, a tutor, and a practicting artist (painter). We adopted a new-born daughter in 1976, and she has two children, 10 and almost 2. BASIL J. WHITING CONSULTANT ON WORKFORCE, COMMUNITY, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT VITA Basil J. Whiting has 40 years of line and staff leadership in the public and private sectors and, in the latter, for nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Mr. Whiting was born and brought up in Rhode Island. After graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1960, he served for five years in military counter-intelligence, returning to civilian life to earn his master’s degree in 1967 from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He then spent nine years as Senior Program Officer at The Ford Foundation, in charge of workforce and community development programs, among other subjects. Mr. Whiting served for four years as Deputy Assistant Secretary of L...Expand for more
abor throughout the Carter Administration, after which he spent six years consulting to management and labor on joint teamwork efforts to improve work life, productivity, quality, and organizational performance. From 1987 to 1991 he implemented such concepts as Vice President, Human Resources, for the nation’s largest commuter railroad (the Long Island Rail Road). In 1991, Mr. Whiting returned to consulting with foundations, non-profits, and business groups (especially the nonprofit arm of the National Association of Manufacturers). While he frequently conceives, raises funds for, and/or directs the implementation of projects, he is also often called on by decision-makers to examine and "make sense" of issues, problems, and potential strategies and actions; conduct needs assessments and feasibility studies; evaluate projects and programs; facilitate conferences, meetings, and strategic planning sessions; and write reports on all of the above. Mr. Whiting lives and works out of an 1853 Brooklyn brownstone that he has almost completed renovating (it's in a national historic district close to the Brooklyn Bridge). He is married and has one child and two grandchildren. He and his family enjoy the amenities of New York City and have vacationed in summers for 20 years at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
