B's Story

In September of 1968 I was to enter Walton SHS as a freshman. Unfortunately that was the year of the teacher's strike and we were out of school until October 1st. My first year there as a 9th grader, was lonely, and scary the 12th graders - to my horror would wrap underclassmen in crepe paper and sometimes wet it. Thank God I was not one of those underclassmen. In the 10th grade I joined the Booster club and we traveled with the cheerleaders to Clinton SHS games (football / basketball/track meets). My first time at Clinton we managed to get caught in a stairwell during the changing of classes; the boys hollared and the girls, laughed, and stepped away from the railings (naturally the staircase was caged in - the boys where going down and we were going up)some of the girls screamed (I've yet to understand why?)at Walton we were made to take gymnastics in gym - I loved tumbling and hopping over that horse, I hated the uneven bars and the balance beam wasn't that bad unless of course they asked you to do something crazy like run across it and jump up. Seriously? You want me to do what? Does anyone besides me...Expand for more
remember Swim Class? The once pc swimsuits - with no support what so ever; the crazy gym teacher telling you to go down to the deep end and jump in? The teacher advising that if you cannot swim she will get you out with the long window pole? What? Why did I have swimming in the winter as last period of the day??? 11th grade I became a cheerleader- actually I was co-captain with Barbara White. I also joined SING, we the Junior Class beat out the Seniors that year "1971" during the competition with our crazy take on God talking to Noah! ala Bill Cosby; Lord the people that year were so much fun and what great people! The cheerleaders represented Walton in a parade down the Grand Concourse in our black skirts and red tops with the big "C" on the front. Thank God for the banner that stated WALTON SHS. I met the love of my life - he was on the Clinton SHS Track Team. Unfortunately things happened - I moved out of my wonderful city that was and still remains "THE BRONX". So needless to say I didn't graduate from Walton and the love of my life and I broke up; but that doesn't mean my heart did not remain in NYC.
