Ben's Story
Life
Shortly after graduating from Munich American High I joined the US Air Force and married my high school sweetheart. We had a marriage of 19 years and had four wonderful children. I retired from the Air Force after 20 good years during which I obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering, was on faculty of US Air Force Academy and conducted research on the Air Force Airborne Laser Laboratory.
I retired from the Air Force in 1980 and I joined Martin Marietta and conducted research on the Space Based Laser program for 19 years. In 1999 I started a small engineering business, Averitech Inc. to continue to conduct research on the Space Based Laser program. I am currently the President of Averitech and continue to conduct research on Space Based Lasers.
School
I attended Harrison High School in Colorado Springs before going to Munich American High in my Junior year. I then graduated from Munich American High School and enlisted in the Air Force that summer (1960).
College
I started going to college evenings while in the Air Force at South Dakota Tech in Rapid City, South Dakota. While in the Air Force I attended Arizona State University from 1966 to 1968 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering on a commissioning program. I was then selected to attend the University of Illinois for a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. While there the US Air Force A...Expand for more
cademy sponsored me for a Doctorate and I obtained a major in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Physics. After that I taught at the AF Academy for four years in the EE Department.
Workplace
I spent twenty years in the Air Force working as an electronics engineer the first 6 years, college student for 4 years, professor at the AF Academy 4 years, and as a Research and Development officer the next 6 years working on the Airborne Laser Laboratory and retired. I then spent 20 years working for Martin Marietta (later Lockheed Martin) in Advanced Missile Defense Technologies working on the Space Based Laser Program as the Technical Director. Then I started an engineering company (Averitech Inc.) and am now its President and CEO and we continue to work on missile defense projects. I retired in 2012 and now enjoy golfing, flying my Cessna 182, fishing Colorado, and traveling as much as I can.
Military
I spent 20 high quality years in the Air Force. I enlisted and got my choice of training in electronics and made it to Tech Sgt in 6 yrs. I then was accepted for a commissioning program which resulted in my going to engineering school. After commissioning I attended graduate school and got both my Masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering. I taught at the Air Force Academy for four years and then was a test director on a fabulous research project (Airborne Laser Laboratory) before I retired.
