Ben's Story
Who am I? Right at the moment I am an engineer with SimEx Iwerks Entertainment. I live in Shanghai with my wife my dogs and cat. My work takes me all over Asia and I haven't seen your side of the ocean for over ten years.
After college I was a teacher in Oklahoma City for eleven years (Acting/Directing/English) and was the department chair for the performing arts highschool. I went back to school full time in '82 as a scenic/lighting/costume designer. Alass, that didn't work out the way it was planned.
I've been a designer for Universal Studios and Disney as well as Sanrio (you know, Hello Kitty?) an now, I'm on my own. I know a lot of you remember the strange sort of whimp that I was but that has all past long ago. I've lived in Japan for three years, Spain for one, and Korea for another three. In the photo above I was 34 and at the University of Oklahoma, it was the year after my son was born. I moved back to California in '85 working for Lee Colortran, Landmark Entertainmen...Expand for more
t at Roboshop as a designer for Gost Busters, and Sanrio. That's when I moved to Japan for three years to design and install Purolando "Discovery Theater", and "Time Machine of Dreams" in Tama, Japan.
I worked for a short time with "Productiones Arco Iris" in Spain as a production designer on Expo '92. Back to L.A. working with Landmark and Dreamquest again as Tech Director for the Samsung Pavilion for Expo '93 in Daejon, Korea. I left before the project was completed to work for Iwerks but continued working on the Expo in Korea.
I fell in love with Asia and spent most of my time here. In '98 I quit my job and became a consultant. I've been working full time since then.
I met my wife in 2001 and we married last year. We bought our house and got a car, more for the dogs than us. Life is good although a little strange. I spoke Spanish but don't get enough chance to practise. I speak some Korean and Mandarine (but don't tell my wife's parents because I don't speak to them).
