Ben's Story
Life
There is a warm nostalgia for Laurier C.I. which opened in Sept. 1965 and Guildwood Village,Scarboro's last Cadillac-Fairview suburb,in the mid-sixties! It was almost pre-drugs,it had sidesplits with panelled rec rooms,a school dance every 2nd Friday monitored by the Latin,History or Math teacher( no cops!) late night parking at the Bluffs; until yellow police cruisers interupted the passion, and pool parties on the Hill with the upscale Cedarbrae in- crowd(beer in the driveway and coca-cola served by mom on the patio).Coupled with the faster,West Hill muscle car bad boys(and their big hair girl friends),a few Satan's Choice bikers(Triumphs & Nortons)and the wimpy Honda 55 scooter driven by "honour" students and it was a slice of "American Graffiti";the movie. HARVEY'S at Markham & Eglinton had real burgers and shakes and a HOT Rod line-up,and the RED BARN was more popular than a new upstart with questionable quality- McDonalds.Saturdays we went bowling.

fcase to become a Laurier graduate with a girlfriend and a Beatles haircut(long gone)in 1967. The U of T called and I went to Europe instead.I rejected materialism, and then bought the whole baby boomer package(BMW included)for the next 35 years. It still feels good with some regrets of course. My marriage of 30 years ended( we're still friends, can't you guess)and I never became the forest ranger I wanted to be. My three sons, carefully nurtured in Oshkosh by Gosh and Polo, are adults now and reject suburbia for its tackiness and are the urban loft generation, too cool for words. The labelled acronym escapes me! Certainly I love them all deeply.
Now in my mid 50's, I refect on the irony of life at my cottage, while "sitting on the dock of the bay" with my girlfriend and our golden retriever and musing about investments, not forests, of OPM (Other peoples money). Is that all there is? Of course not, Homer Simpson is my philosophical mentor and always sets the record straight. It just about the beer. Doh!! Where can I buy Duffs suds?
