Ben Johnson joined Porter Novelli in May 2003, and provides senior counsel to agency clients. With a reputation for personal integrity and toughness, his expertise spans over three decades of nationally recognized leadership in management and public policy.
Ben has the distinction of being one of the longest serving African American members in White House history. He served two years under President Jimmy Carter and was one of 30 staff members to serve the entire eight years with President Clinton. In the Carter White House, he served as Director of Consumer Programs and was an assistant to noted consumer advocate Esther Peterson.
One of the highest-ranking African Americans in White House history, Johnson last served as Assistant to the President and Director of the President's Initiative for One America. In that capacity, he oversaw the first freestanding White House office in history to examine and focus on closing the opportunity gap between the races in the US. He served as the White House point person for promoting the President's race relations goals. Additionally, he worked with the White House Domestic Policy office to increase funding to end the health disparities in the US.
Ben joined the White House staff in 1993 as an Associate Director in the Office of Public Liaison. He later served as Special Assistant...Expand for more
to the President, and was responsible for all areas of outreach to the African American community. He later served as Deputy Assistant to the President, with an expanded portfolio that included all areas of outreach to various constituencies, including seniors, Hispanics, Jewish, White Ethnics and members of the Disability Community. He was, and is a strong advocate for opportunity and responsibility.
Ben is a former Deputy Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and has served in key positions in local and federal governments. After leaving the Carter Administration, he was appointed Administrator of the Business Regulation Administration in Washington, DC. In that capacity, Ben regulated all corporations doing business in the District of Columbia, issued all business licenses, and enforced all food protection laws. In 1988, he was appointed the Administrator of the Housing and Environmental Administration where he directed the enforcement and compliance of all housing and environmental laws in the nation's capitol.
He is the recipient of numerous awards, including two honorary doctorate degrees for public service. He has given remarks at Harvard University, the Brookings Institute, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Aspen Institute. He has been married to Jacqueline Vassar Johnson for 38 years and they have five children and 10 wonderful grandchildren..
