CLASS OF 1973
Plainville, CT

Benita's Story

I graduated from Plainville High School in June of 1973, having entered there for the first time in September of 1972. Previous to that I had lived in West Hartford where I attended Conard High School. I was very shy, but enjoyed singing in the chorus and the special chorus- Swing Sixteen. I did have a couple of friends: Jackie Johnson, a very bright and musically talented junior, Joan Kazsmarczyk, whose boyfriend, Bill Burke from New Britain, partnered us both at the Senior Prom because my blind date, Glen Ritner, chickened out at the eleventh hour. There was a Cape Verdean named Mario Barboza who was always nice to me in the corridors. Steve Clayton was my boyfriend for a short time, and he gave my first- and up until now, only- motorcycle ride. The year after graduation, I entered training for my diploma as a practical nurse at Goodwin Tech and New Britain General Hospital and...Expand for more
graduated from there in 1975. In 1977, Bill Burke and I got married. In August, I became a mother for the first time and then again in 1982. I have two sons, both all grown up, and I have three grandchildren. Bill died in 2002. In 2003, I became reacquainted with John Towle, who had been my next door neighbor in Waterbury way back in the 60s, and after several happy years of happy domestic partnering, we married at Walnut Beach in Milford CT, where now live. I finally got my RN from Excelsior College in 2007, after many false starts. John and enjoy vacationing in Bar Harbor, Maine and we have been to Acadia National Park many times. Ours is a mixed marriage: I like the Red Sox and he, the Yankees.Politically, he is conservative (mostly) and I am leftward-leaning. We share loves of genealogy and early American history, and are Rev. War reenactors, although this year, not as much.
