Benjamin's Story
Military
I graduated from Arizona State University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Military History. I then enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves and after completing the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, California, was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1989 I was selected for OCS and received a commission as a Second Lieutenant on August 19, 1989.
Upon completion of The Basic School in March 1990, I reported to Pensacola, Florida, for Flight School. I was designated a Naval Flight Officer and promoted to First Lieutenant in July 1991 and subsequently reported to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 in El Toro, California, where I was trained as a Weapons and Systems Officer (WSO) for F/A-18D Hornets.
In 1993, I was assigned to VMFA(AW)-533 at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, where I served as the Ground Safety Officer, Ground Training Officer, Flight Schedule Officer and Flight Officer. In 1995 I was promoted to Captain. While assigned to VMFA(AW)-533 I deployed twice to Aviano, Italy, in support of Operations Deny Flight, Provide Promise and Decisive Edge.
In 1996, I was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where I served as a Forward Air Controller (FAC). While assigned as a FAC I deployed to Panama in support of the Marine Security Company assigned to protect the Embassy and Ambassador.
In 1997, I returned to MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina and was assigned to VMFA(AW)-332 where I served as the WSO Training Officer (WTO) and the Logistics Officer. During this tour I attended NSAWC TOPGUN. In 1999, I deployed to Tazsar, Hungary, in support of Operations Noble Anvil and Allied Forge and was promoted to Major. In 2000, I deployed to Iwakuni, Japan, as part of the Unit Deployment Program and participated in Cobra Gold 2000 in Thailand.

rine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia, where I completed my Masters in Military Studies. In 2001, I assumed the duties of the Current Operations Fixed-Wing Planner for II Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While at II MEF I was assigned as an Individual Augment for the Coalition Forces Land Component Command Staff in Camp Doha, Kuwait, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon my return in 2002, I assumed the duties as the Fixed-Wing Planner for II MEF and then was selected as Aide de Camp for the II MEF Commanding General and in 2003 deployed to Northern Iraq with the Military Coordination and Liaison Command for Operation Iraqi Freedom I.
In 2003, I reported to VMFAT-101 for F/A-18D WSO Refresher Training at MCAS Miramar, California. In December 2003, after completion of the WSO refresher syllabus, I reported back to MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina. In Feb 2004, while working as the Current Operations Officer I was assigned as an Individual Augment to I MEF for Operation Iraqi Freedom II. While assigned to I MEF I served as the Air Officer for First Force Service Support Group at Al Taqaddum Air Base, Iraq. Upon my return in September 2004 I was assigned to VMFA(AW)-224 as the Assistant Maintenance Officer. In Jan 2005, I deployed to Al Asad, Iraq, in support of OIF 04-06 and assumed the duties as the Maintenance Officer and in July was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Upon return to CONUS in August 2005, I became the Executive Officer for the squadron and in June 2006 I became the Commanding Officer for MAG-31 PSD.
In Nov 2007 I assumed command of VMFA(AW)-224. We are currently deployed to Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program and have participated in Exercises Cope Tiger in Thailand, Commando Sling in Singapore, Ardent Blitz in Korea and are preparing to deploy to Alaska for Northern Edge.
