Benjamin's Story
Life
Howdy curious ones from the past! After high-school I went to college in Northern Arizona.
Opened my eyes to the great big world out there, and let me see that California isn't the center of the universe (although it's still great to visit.) After graduating I visited some friends who had moved to Chicago and fell in love with the place. One of these friends worked at an advertising agency as an art-director. Sounded like a great idea to me: Sit around all day and brainstorm ideas for commercials for (mostly) useless products and services. I went back to California with the notion of putting an art directors "book" together and returning to Chicago to get a job.
Long story short, a year later I was hired by the aforementioned agency (aint nepotism grand?)
and 18 years later I'm still there. I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that most of my job involves countless bs meetings, dealing with irrational or overly rational clients, compromise, and creating more audio/visual clutter in an already overcluttered world. But also, it's been pretty great too. I've had the opportunity to work on some of the world's biggest brands. McDonald's,Kellogg's,Coke,Kraft,United Airlines,Reebok and evil tobacco giant Philip Morris to...Expand for more
name just a few. (Actually, PM has reformed their evil ways in recent years) I've been on million dollar commercial shoots with A-list hollywood directors and shot print ads with legendary photographers of the fashion world. I've also watched paint dry countless times as an overly meticulous tabletop photographer spent all day lighting a washer/dryer or bottle of ketchup.
Hands down the best thing about my employer is that 6 months after I was hired, they hired a young lady named Mary from Atlanta, Ga, as a junior copywriter. After a "When Harry Met Sally"
couple of years we started dating and eventually tied the knot. After our oldest son, Van was about 2 we moved to the 'burbs. 7 years, 2 more kids, another local move and a new dog, (Kipper, my first dog ever!) we've settled in to parenthood and onset middle age. Kids are awesome, but who knew that parenting would be the toughest job you ever loved? (next to the Peace Corp of course) I just hope they have a world that isn't too f#%*d to live in when they grow up. Well, sorry to ramble on so long. 23 years is a lot to fit into such a tiny box! If you get a chance and are so inclined, drop me a line or take a look at my artwork online (hersheyworks) Best wishes, Ben
